I’m most likely at odds with most of my liberal friends, as I see Edward Snowden as a little bitch traitor. I’ve known more than a few real people get hurt, and even murdered, as a result of someone opening their big mouth. I knew two people that died in the World Trade Center.
If I was at my Manhattan residence on September 11th, there is a very small but also very real chance I could have died, as my subway stop was Chambers St/ World Trade Center, and most every day I was in New York I’d catch the A train around between 8-9 in the morning.
I’d say there was less than a 1% chance that I would have been in the towers when they fell, and as I was going into the subway below the towers it’s safe to say I would have had a hell of a story, but I’d be OK. But I don’t give a shit HOW small the chances are, 1% or 99%, it’s all the same to me. I don’t want, nor do I want anyone I care about, to take any chances.
My ex-wife was IN the WTC during the first bombing in 1993. Twenty years ago, Derek Dingle and I were at the Atlanta Black Expo for Milestone when I heard about the bombing. I was a fucking wreck all day, as I knew my wife had taken a group of kids there on a field trip. It was one of the longest days of my life as I tried my best to catch a flight back to NYC because I could not bear not knowing AND being in another city. She finally called me at my hotel right when I was about to catch a cab to the airport.
She and her group were OK — but they were not allowed to leave the building until the authorities had done whatever the fuck they needed to do.
Oh, and if I was in Manhattan at my residence, there is an 100% chance I would have SEEN the towers being hit or collapsing because the view from the floor to ceiling windows in my living room was the WTC. I have a hard enough time getting roadkill out of my mind — no matter how fast I’m going when I pass what was once someone’s kitty cat.
So, at an airport, I don’t care if I have to strip naked, pee in a cup, present my last 3 years of tax returns, and name all the Presidents before I get on a plane, I’m good with that.
Yes, that means I’m good with the NSA trolling for information, and so would my liberal friends if the moment the practice was abolished the NEW WTC was hit. YES it can be abused, YES it’s ripe for misuse, and yes, and I’m willing to live with that because a 1% chance is too much of a chance for me to take with real lives.
All that said, I wonder HOW many on the Right can agree with me about the NSA program that looks at phone records, that’s LOOKS at phone records, but do not agree with me about background checks before someone GETS a fucking gun.
That, to me, is the fucking height of hypocrisy.
I’m ok with the phone surveillance because 9/11 was literally in my front yard, and time has NOT made me less concerned. I’m for background checks, and so are the VAST majority of Americans because Gun violence by crazy motherfuckers will continue to kill scores of people for no other reason except it was easy to buy a fucking gun, whether or not you are crazy or just crazy THAT day.
The GOP is changing its position on immigration because they simply cannot afford to continue to fuck Latinos and EVER get that massive vote. They are not changing because they want to, they are changing because they have to.
What’s it going to take to change their position on common sense gun control?
A mass shooting at a country club?
