The last eight years have been ugly in terms of our political discourse.  Rabid right-wing extremists think they are being witty when they use racial stereotypes to criticize the President and First Lady.  They refer to Michelle Obama as the President’s “baby mama.”  They accuse the President of not being a “true” American.

This is a form of political speech referred to as the “dog whistle,” and it is particularly vile because so many politicians are shocked — shocked! — to think you understood what they were saying.

We’ve had eight years of racial dog whistles.  With Hillary Clinton declaring her candidacy, we’re going to have at least 18 months more of dog whistles about gender.

There are a lot of things I don’t like about Hillary Clinton.  I find her foreign policy views much too hawkish, and I think she’s too attached to the corporatist wing of the Democratic Party (which is far too similar to the corporatist wing of the Republican Party).  She used to sit on the Board of Wal-Mart, which I think is one of the world’s worst companies, right up there with Coca-Cola and McDonalds.

There are a lot of things I do like about Hillary Clinton.  She’s smart and she does her homework.  She actually listens to people and their opinions, unlike so many politicians who seem to be thinking of their next sound-bite while waiting their turn to speak.

None of these things involve her being a woman.

I appreciate that she’s an accomplished woman in a field that continues to be dominated by men.  It’s easier for me to imagine how she feels in certain situations.  Still, it won’t matter how “relatable” she is if she doesn’t propose policies that do something about income inequality, climate change and reining in our bloated military.  Actually, I’d like her better if she was Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders.

That’s not how our media tends to discuss her.  At the supposedly liberal New York Times, columnist Maureen Dowd writes about Hillary as if Clinton is trying to sit at her Cool Kids table without first kissing Dowd’s Popular-Girl ass.  If I were to subject Dowd to the same pop culture psych profile trolling she employs with Clinton, I’d have to assume she wants all the male attention, and won’t let any other women enjoy the spotlight.

This gentleman merely wanted to make a clever little toy, and found himself denounced by bigots of several stripes.

And then there are just lunatics.

As long as women (and people of color and queers and immigrants and more) are considered to be something other than normal (which is how white, straight, Christian cis men think of themselves), we won’t be judged fairly.  We won’t be able to get the medical care we need, even with a doctor’s prescription.

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio are running for president.  There’s a possibility that Louisiana’s Bobby Jindal may run as well.  Will we see them attacked as “demographically symbolic?”  Will we be exhorted to “take our country back?”

I doubt it.

Martha Thomases, Media Goddess, wishes her friend Randy Dipentima a most wonderful birthday.

“There are a lot of things I do like about Hillary Clinton. She’s smart and she does her homework.”

If she’s so smart why didn’t she realize that you CAN have two email accounts on the same device? I can access my work email and my personal email on my computer, my iPad and my iPhone. She is either not smart or she’s lying.

Enjoyed this astute Martha-eyed view. Hilary Clinton will, no doubt, be the lesser of the Evils we have to choose from, if she can keep the Democratic candidacy. George Harberberger, who responded to this blog, and who seems to be still dwelling on what email account Candidate Clinton used IS just joking and I didn’t get it, right? The very moneyed detractors in the opposition will be pushing on these little “Hobknobs for tiny minds” buttons ceaselessly, and it’s going to be very boring.

Exactly what DO “white, straight, Christian cis men think of themselves”? And, not being Christian or male, how would you know? At what point is it acceptable to paint people of certain (evidently) despised groups with the same brush and still be able to take umbrage at the accusation of stereotyping?
Some of my best friends are Christian men. I allow them into my Country Club. I swim with them (well, I only swim at the JCC, but, still, we allow goyim in if they pledge to buy a tree). I buy their comic books, I read their history books, I watch their movies. I don’t care for mayonnaise, but I get along with most of those who do. I really haven’t noticed all, or the majority, or even a lot of them being raving bigots as you suggest.
Hillary Clinton sucks, and I’ll vote for her only if I have to. But that has nothing to do with her gender one way or the other; I dislike her for the same reasons you mention, without necessarily vilifying those specific corporations per se. Simply put, right now it appears likely that I will have to vote for her, as Jill says, as the lesser of two evils. I am reminded that it was about 45 years ago when Ed Sanders asked “Is George Washington the lesser of two evils? Sometimes I wonder.” (Wide, Wide River; from the Fugs album It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest)
And, George, by the time you’re anywhere near Hillary’s age — as I am — the whole interwebs tubes and wires thing can get confusing.
But, Martha, at least we agree on Maureen Doud: she is a worthless wet bag of shit.

Mike, people like Wayne LaPierre who talk about “taking our country back” are ALMOST always straight white cis Christian males (and, sometimes, females). That doesn’t mean all SWCCM (and sometimes F) share that view. A might be a subset of B, but that doesn’t make B a subset of A.

Sorry, no I am not joking and yes I am dwelling on Hillary’s email account. She is in violation of U.S. Code, Title 18, Part I, Chapter 101, Section 2071, Paragraph a which states:
“Whoever willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, or destroys, or attempts to do so, or, with intent to do so takes and carries away any record, proceeding, map, book, paper, document, or other thing, filed or deposited with any clerk or officer of any court of the United States, or in any public office, or with any judicial or public officer of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”

    And paragraph b which states:
“Whoever, having the custody of any such record, proceeding, map, book, document, paper, or other thing, willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States.”

I didn’t write this law. It was passed by the United States Congress, one of the three branches of government Hillary Clinton was elected to.
    https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/2071
So if anyone in government had the balls to point this out, she would be ineligible for office.

On another subject, I read and post on blogs where I am in the political minority. I expect push back but I endeavor to make my point without belittling those who think differently. I don’t think they have “tiny minds” and even if I did, would not be sanguine about expressing it.

Mike, I am 63 and by no means a computer expert. Hillary is 67 and should know better. At least someone on her staff should know better. Huma Abedin, (whose husband presumably knows a bit about computers), should have clued her in. But no, she went before the press and stated it was too inconvenient to have a device for each email account which was not true because you don’t need a separate device for each account and besides she DID have more than one device. Is that stupidity or arrogance? My opinion? She’s arrogant, thinks we’re stupid and lying is her default setting.

Martha, you don’t contradict what I said because I never said all Christian white males (et al, when appropriate) share a uni-mind. As for your allegation that those who advocate taking our country back are “ALMOST all” CWSCCLSMFT’s, well, that depends on whose ox is being gored and how the phrase is interpreted. For example, Native Americans would get a totally different meaning out of that. So would Frederick Douglass. Margaret Sanger, still another view. There are lots of malcontents out there.

Which is a very good thing.

(CWSCCLSMFT sounds like the merger of two advertising agencies.)

When I survey what is soon to be a crowded room of rabid contenders for the upcoming presidential run..I shuder to think of of the ensuing drivel and outright lies filled with hypocrisy the American public has to be subjected to…
If you have a telivision which I haven’t had in years the endless posturing, promising, and proseletizing is pathetic. Please mommy make it stop. Why at this most critical juncture must we STILL have to chose between the lesser..of the LEAST?? America is in the final stages of a country that desperately needs oxygen and is gasping for air. Political leadership not hobbled by corporate interest not even hidden is a thing of the past. Democrat.
    Republican. . Liberal.conservative
    are all fostered fantastic fairytales.
Divide and conquer are old tricks. Look at what we have done to the middle east. And look what victoria noodleman..nuland

    AND HONEST.
Americas time clock is ticking much faster than anyone can imagine. We HAVE NO MORE TIME let alone money to waste on yet another unsustainable war. Never mind the trillions that are wasted how about needless lives and blood shed on both sides. Im a veteran. .soon to be 65 and I see the hunan wreckage at the va.hospital on 23 rd. st. Its sickening. And for what??? Exactly what has iran done to us? More christians killed fir some idiotic hawk and their idea if patriotism? Dont get mw started.
