Ready for a Latino President by Q. Reyes: Artistic Warfare #1

Your browser may not support display of this image. We Latinos are underestimated and overestimated simultaneously. How is this possible? We’ve become one of the largest consumer groups in the Country, and still, there are people out there trying to deport us. Well some of us. I’m Puerto Rican, so that deportation doesn’t really apply to me, but you catch my drift.
Random people always ask me, “Hey, is Puerto Rico the capital of Mexico?” I, of course, randomly answer, “Yes. Yes, it is” – because that’s the type of ignorance that will keep us stealthily becoming stronger until the right time to strike comes – the time is when we have one of “ours” in the White House, and then, we get to decide who gets deported.
I know what you’re thinking… “I should probably clear my browser history before my wife or husband gets home,” but that can wait. I need you to pay attention and support our cause, because Latinos voted for Obama overwhelmingly, and all that we ask is that we get that support back when it’s our turn.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your chromosome makeup, the Country is more ready to have a Latino MAN as President, than a White WOMAN. I know what you’re thinking: “I’m hungry and I don’t feel like cooking or going out to eat,” but we need to stay focused. I say the previous sexist statement implying that Sarah Palin is the woman running against the Latino man.
Then, we get to the question of “who is qualified enough to be a Latino presidential candidate?” At this point no one is, but look at the Obama story… he was nowhere to be found eight years ago, and here he is now, President Elect.
Before Obama came on the scene, Black people with the best chances to becoming president were Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Marion Barry, and maybe, just maybe, OJ Simpson. Obama changed the game for the better, thank, God.
So, lets go beyond the candidates and look into the most important thing: Policy. What influences will a Latino President have on the Country’s culture? The answer is the same as any other American President.
If a Latino President gets to the White House its not like he’s going to have two-hundred people living in it like the stereo-type suggests. He will not ride around in low-rider limos with hydraulics and carry a switchblade in his back pocket. That’s not going to happen. Did Obama appoint Snoop Dogg as Secretary of State like Rush Limbaugh probably thought he would? No. That’s not the way it works.
The moral of it all is that we Latinos are underrepresented – everywhere! There are more Gay characters on television than Latino characters. There’s nothing wrong with Gay characters, but what the hell is wrong with Latino characters? Yeah, we got that show Ugly Betty. So? We’re supposed to be happy with that and not complain?
Maybe we don’t have it as bad as Asian people, who only have Lucy Lu, Lisa Ling, and the Korean chick from Grey’s Anatomy; and, we are certainly better off than Middle Easterners who only have the one dude from “Lost”, but my point is having a Latino President will not illegally alienate, no pun intended, really, the rest of the Country. On the contrary, it will unite all of us more. Plus we have better food, are better dancers, and certainly, better lovers – ask anyone who has experienced a Latin Lover. We have their vote for sure.

IMO, Bill Richardson would be a great president. He’s only half Latino, but fifty percent was enough for Barack, so it should work.

“Hey, is Puerto Rico the capital of Mexico?”
Hey, you mean it isn’t??? Ay caramba!
Estoy bromeando, hermano! 🙂
“Then, we get to the question of “who is qualified enough to be a Latino presidential candidate?”
I say you Latinos oughta start prepping Jessica Alba now as a counter to Sassy Sarah. We’re talkin’ bout a landslide here! Oh wait a minute…I forgot… according to her, she’s not really a Latina. Snap! Cameron Diaz! That’s the ticket!
On the real, though… Like the poster above… I like Bill Richardson or Ken Salazar.
” Plus we have better food, are better dancers, and certainly, better lovers – ask anyone who has experienced a Latin Lover.”
I’ll give you the food, and maybe the dancing…but lovers??!
Need I remind you that ….”Once you go……..

Ar Lewis…
I can only HOPE that you were referreing to the LEGAL latino community. You know, the ones that took the proper road to get here.
This country was built on the backs of all Immigrants, the MAJORITY of which, did things the LEGAL way, and got here from their country of origin, and going through the correct and lawful channels, in order to become CITIZENS of the United States of America.
My ancestors took crappy jobs, dealt with prejudice, and took low pay in order for an OPPORTUNITY to PERSUE the American Dream. They helped build this nation, and they did it (again, I am speaking of the majority) the right way, they earned it by becoming citizens first.
Sure, they were beaten, looked down upon as lesser human beings, and even moreso when they couldn’t speak the language (which is why most of them were regaled to day labor jobs) but they took on all of these challenges, instilled morals, and principles in their children, and emphasized education.
They ALL learned, that they were here to fit in with the USA and not the other way around. Because they took pride in being an American, all the while keeping their cultures intact, within the confines of home and family. In their eyes, they were Americans FIRST regardless of where they were born, so they did what it takes.

“The proper road,” Dead, implies there’s a level playing field. When it comes to immigration, there’s never been a level playing field in this nation, and for the past 80 years or so, it’s the Latinos that have had the short end of the stick.
Sure, Chinese-Americans didn’t have the right to vote until the Depression and Japanese-Americans had their land and their freedom taken from them the decade after. European Jews fleeing Hitler’s camps were turned back at the American shores by FDR. In the 19th Century, Germans were all dirty anarchists and Irish were treated the same as dogs — literally. And then there’s that Civil War thing. Ask any American named Mohammed (you know, the single most popular name in the world) how much fun they’ve had in the past seven years. Discrimination and outright hated has been our stock in trade ever since our mongrel nation was formed.
I’m generally opposed to doing a Top 10 list of discrimination, but damn, we should recognize that a third of this nation (well, the lower 48) used to be Latino and all of it used to be “Indian.” As for the other two states — well, we literally invaded and seized Hawaii and ousted its queen, and we bought Alaska from the Russians and treated its natives as just another Indian tribe.
I love this mongrel nation. America is an awesome smorgasbord of cultures; it is our strength as well as our uniqueness. The leveling of our culture will destroy us. America is based upon the concept of fair play for all: the Bill of Rights was written to protect the minorities and the powerless. This attitude must be extended to our immigration laws which were unfair at the outset and have been made much, much worse over time.
