Growing Roots in the New Year, by Tatiana – In The Mix #3

airforceart_tatiana.jpgHappy New Year! 2008 truly flew by and was a blur to me.  While wrapping up 2008 and reflecting on the highlights and lowlights- I realized that it was one of my best years as an emerging artist. It reminded me of how much I’ve grown since I started my personal art blog over 4 years ago, which contained regular updates of my milestones, setbacks, and lessons learned while I was establishing my style and finding my artistic voice.

I’m a pretty headstrong individual and have enough perseverance to power a small army. The last three years I’ve made conscious choices to be involved in professional activities, seminars, conferences, conventions, and organizations that helped me build a solid foundation and network of colleagues that I can now call upon for advice and collaboration. In doing so, I sacrificed a lot of my time, energy, and money. Initially it was a struggle to convince the people closest to me that Art was a viable field and my efforts and time would not be in vain.

What parent really wants to see their talented first born daughter become a starving artist?

As a first generation American citizen, convincing my fairly traditional Caribbean-Latina mother and Middle Eastern father that an Art career can garner success after they scrimped and saved to give me the American Dream was difficult to say the least. Don’t get me wrong they have supported me every step of the way. But if I would have gone after a Management career or Computer job, introductions to my father’s friends would not have gone like this:

Father: Tatiana, my friend wants to know what you do for a living. What should I tell them???

Tatiana: Tell them I’m an artist.

Father: (Look of confusion) Huh? When did that happen? I told them you work on computers.

Tatiana: No, Daddy. I studied Art.

Father: Why am I just finding this out?

Tatiana: Daddy, I’ve been an Art major since the day you drove me to the University and I declared myself an Art major.??

Father: Well, I’m telling them you are a Computer Animator. It sounds better.

That was the conversation verbatim, every year, for the last 4 years, until now. I was commissioned by U.S. Air Force Art Program, currently my artwork is on display at the Pentagon. When I got my promotional flyers printed, my father asked me if he could take a stack to give to his friends and coworkers. This was the first outward sign of his acceptance, because my Art career finally became tangible- something that he could understand and explain. That evening we sat together for an hour while he asked me to tell him exactly what I do do for a living and wrote it down as a reminder note. My father no longer introduces me to his friends as a Computer Animator. His new introduction is:

My daughter, Tatiana, is an Artist and Designer who works in the publishing and entertainment industry. She is the Vice President of the Society of Illustrators and even has a painting in the Pentagon.

After giving my all to my career, the foundation I’ve worked slow and steady on is beginning to flourish. Last year I was a guest speaker at several elementary schools, universities and Comic Con International; speaking about my experience as an Artist and building my foundation. Most recently artwork I created for Michael Davis’ Straight No Chaser column was featured in the set design of James Gunn’s Sparky and Mikaela for Xbox Live’s Horror Meets Comedy series. The video debuted on December 31st and is available for free download now on Xbox and will available on Xbox Live’s site January 7th.

I don’t do New Years Resolutions- I’d rather set, create and revamp goals throughout the year as I grow. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow roots in my foundation, reaping the fruits that it will bare and sharing the journey with you here In The Mix.

Hahah! Too true Tatiana. My parents were always super supportive… but always referred to my business as “our Son’s “comic book” nonsense… he works too much.”

Then our first book gets published, and suddenly, “My son, the comic book maker…” and “go buy his book!”. Though, who am I to complain. I think the sales figures jumped up 66% due to my folks inability to not gloat about their only child. Ha.

Good luck in the new year… and you make a damn fine point. No need to resolve every year, so long we always strive to make ourselves better. I strive to make myself an asian chick. Think Mr. Davis perked up there?

I know almost every artist has his or her parents biting their nails, but it’s still good to hear that I’m not alone when my grandmother loves telling me that one story about her friend’s son who’s driving a truck after a failed art career.

Rock on for you and your victories, today and tomorrow!

    1) I love the picture you used. Extremely badass.

    2) In addition to being a kick-ass artist, you write very, very well. I love how you were able to craft this all into a well-built story.

    3) Great, relevant story. This should be featured somewhere. FEATURED I tell you.

    4) You are a beast.

    4) I kinda wanna procreate with you right now.

p.s. I should also mention that as an actor, I can totally relate. When you mention sacrificing your “time, energry, and money”, it’s what is called paying dues. You give up your opportunity to make MONEY and use that TIME to put your ENERGY into seemingly fruitless efforts. The family can’t always see it that way at first. The more appropriate term for sacrifice is investment.

    Tatiana,

That was the best thing I have read all year. Yes THIS year but It’s going to take some doing to beat this gem.

So-Howard wants to ‘procreate’ with you. That is indeed a first here at MDW. Howard this is not a dating site and I’m not a pimp

Well I’m not a Pimp, ANYMORE.

That aside, I think that was one of the best complements you could pay an independent women. I also noticed you came back and told her you were an actor-not so sure that was a smooth move there buddy but hey, it just may work.

So just in case you are serious -please forward your SS# and last 10n years of tax returns as well as a current photo so I can run the standard -“OH YOU THINK YOU GONNA HIT THAT?”-background check.

Once approved you will then be asked to submit a to a blood test and explain nuclear fusion in a 5000 essay. SINGLE SPACED!!!

Once you have completed all of the above I will then set up a polygraph and upon successful completion of that test the next phase will be to fight and (this is important) DEFEAT the HULK.

After that I will meet with you to administer the hard part of the rest of the application in person.

    Yeah she’s worth all that.

    1) pimp you are not. I would say that you are clearly MANAGER status.

    2) me and tati go back a couple years, so she knows my creds… enough to have known the actor part beforehand anyway.

    3) the “p.s.” part came about after having read the first post and noticing that I could’ve thrown in a lil more depth to make known to her how much I appreciated the story. but, I have heard that throwin the actor thing out there every now and again don’t hurt…

    4) big emphasis on “kinda” in the “kinda wanna procreate”. procreating ain’t a part of my blueprint but tati tempts me lol

    5) I think I can find an old 5000-word essay on nuclear fushion lyin around here somewhere…

Well spoken. BTW expect a call from Dr. Banner…

So Tatiana, while Howard is going the MOTU route, might I covertly ply you with boxes of Peruvian chocolate, 2 dozen red roses trimmed with gold leaf, and a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon? Topped off with a NIKKOR 70-300mm zoom lens and a NIKKOR 105mm thrown in for those….ahem…up close and personal pictures of………..butterfly wings and rainbow reflections in water puddles.

Yes, while what’s left of poor, deluded Howard is being raked over the coals by the big man, you and l can be found walking hand in hand while debating the merits iClone over TAB Manga. 🙂

On the real tho..major props for the Pentagon commission!! U B Bad!

    p.s. I make a mean Empanada. 😉

    @ Reg,

Because we have been boys for a while I’m going to cut you a break so below is your criteria please read CAREFULLY:

Please forward your SS# and last 5 years of tax returns as well as a current photo so I can run the standard -”OH YOU THINK YOU GONNA HIT THAT?”-background check.

Once approved you will then be asked to submit a to a blood test and explain nuclear fusion in a 5000 essay. SINGLE SPACED!!!

Once you have completed all of the above I will then set up a polygraph and upon successful completion of that test the next phase will be to fight and (this is important) survive the HULK.

What break you ask? Well my brother you do not (I repeat!!) DO NOT have to DEFEAT the HULK. If you can manage to live, we will give you a 24 hour break before we administer the hard part of the test. Oh and I’m only asking for 5 years of tax returns.

    BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE-

Because you are my boy I’m going to give you a one up ( Howard don’t read this part) Reg, here it is…

Tatiana likes Colt 45 in a plain brown paper bag. 40 ounces stolen not paid for.

    Good luck!

So it’s like THAT, huh? No problem. No pain, no gain…da dame is worth da game…. I ain’t sweatin’ the other….Bring on the green PUNK! Cause… (and this is for you, Lady T)… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y96mdVTMByk&feature=related

Michael, thanks for the look out. Girl Ruff an’ Tuff, huh? Cool…MUCH easier on the pockets. But if she prefers Colt 45 over Steel Reserve then I dunno if she can hang…

C’mon sir.. you know that was the equivalent of me suckin’ in my gut for the fair Lady T… now you done gone and blown my rap.

But on the real…if it’s the Hulk with Banner’s brain, then this would be cause for alarm as he could trace my IP…. but if it’s dumb Hulk?….then I’m as safe as all the rest of the anonymous internet dweebs who type all big knowing they’re safe in their mama’s basement.

    HULK SMASH!!!…..keyboard.

Cause despite Howard’s little dart…. My Dream Lives!! I got the Steel waiting…..

    Reserve that is.

My comment can’t top any of these comments…I’m not gonna try to procreate with you or pimp you out to readers.
But I must say that this column is nice and inspiring.

I wish I had XBOX Live so I could snag the video. 🙁

And I think it’s pretty awesome/a really huge deal for one of your artworks to be displayed in the Pentagon!

    (lol at the comments)

@ Marc You are right, once parents embrace an art career they make for the best PR. My mother keeps a stack of my postcards and business cards on hand for every time she gets asked how I’m doing.

May I suggest a trip to Thailand for your Asian chick transformation, the guys there make very convincing women 🙂

“I’m flattered to say the least.”

That’s all well and good, but who hath won the heart of fair maiden?? I was bringing my A game here.

Don’t make me break out in my David Ruffin….. “If I’ve got to beg and plead for your sympathy…..”

    🙂

Dude, I can so relate to you. Well the parents having the whole “WTF ART?!” freak out. :] But it all works out in the end if you pursue your passion or at least that is what I have heard. Now I believe it. Kudos on the Pentagon art thing! That is MAJOR.
