Another Comic Con Survival Guide, by Tatiana – In The Mix #26

Comic ConI’m taking up the challenge that MOTU set forth and will dedicate my next few articles to Comic Con and all it’s greatness. I’ve convinced many people over the years that this is the place to be if you are a creative talent or just a lover of any and everything in pop culture. There is really nothing that can be said or done to truly prepare anyone with the sensory overload that is sure to overcome them when you experience firsthand what it means to have over 125,000 people inhabit a 5 mile radius for the love of comics and pop culture.

I know there are plenty of Comic Con Survival Guides out there. But here’s my attempt at listing some of my top advice to making your Comic Con experience a smooth one based on the questions and misconceptions I’ve heard from recently from first-timers.

The Program Guide is out!
You’ve circled your top panel choices, you’ve picked out your outfit and are ready to impress the stars of Twilight. Don’t forget to allot enough time to deal with the traffic into San Diego, finding an empty $30 parking lot, standing in the long entrance line (which sometimes wraps the building) to get your convention badge, and then braving the crowds to get to the panel room.

First off the sensory overload that will overcome you is intense! The amount of people crowding around you, the amazing costumes passing by, and excitement in the air is enough to distract your time. Don’t screw up your panel attending schedule by thinking you will arrive at 12pm and just waltz in to a panel at 1pm.

Might I add the only panel you really need in your schedule is The Black Panel.

10:00-11:30 The Black Panel— By now you must have heard about the massive amount of fun The Black Panel is! 2009’s panel will be the one that puts all others to shame. This year’s panel includes Ludacris, Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite), Kel Mitchell (Kenan & Kel, The Brash Brothers), Prodigal Sunn (The Wu Tang Clan), Reggie Hudlin (Black Panther animated series), Denys Cowan (Black Panther animated series), and as always some surprise guests! Moderated by Michael Davis. Room 5AB

Swag, Swag, and More Swag.
I’m sure you’ve heard there are tons of neat valuable and quite frankly useless free swag. Be prepared! There have been plenty of times I have gotten fantastic DVD’s posters, artwork, toys, books, etc but am only met with the realization that I have no room in my car, suitcase, or flight. So save some room in your suitcase for the amount of freebies that you will acquire. Bringing your own backpack and poster tube is helpful. You can pick up a poster tube at an art supply store or shipping center. It will help protect the signed posters and art you get and it keeps it out of the way while you walk the floor.

Speaking of walking.
There is plenty of it! Wear comfortable shoes and have layers. If you are so lucky to have a hotel room in walking distance, outfit changes and dropping off swag is an easy task. However if you plan to be at the convention for the full day, make sure your feet can handle your footwear and that your clothing can brave the heat of people walking close to you like a sardine can. Have a light jacket in case the air conditioning is too high in a panel. And my favorite, be sure to look nice enough that you can go from the convention floor to an exclusive Comic Con dinner or party. Often major booths will raffle off chances to go to their party or you meet new friends that invite you out.

Money, money, money.
Be prepared with cash before going in the convention center. Cash you say? Nope it’s not just free swag on the floor. There are plenty of exclusive items for sale on the exhibitor floor, rare comic books, signing opportunities, and of course food. The lines for the ATM machines get long and not to mention they run out of money.

Have business cards, portfolio or promotional items.
Comic Con is not just the fanboy and fangirls wonderland. Some of the most influential movers and shakers are in attendance and they are actually walking the convention floor and running the exhibitor booths. The worse is to be in your dream publisher or studios booth and rave about their projects to one of the exhibitors to find out that they are the creative director or editor and you have no business cards or leave behinds. There’s a Kinko’s inside the convention center so there is little excuse to not being prepared. Or if you have some if it’s still at least 2 or 3 days before the Con take advantage of a resource like Next Day Printers, affordable prices and quick turnaround.

Pack a lunch.
Take it back to the lovely days of your youth and pack a lunch like you did for a field trip. Since you already have your backpack on hand for your freebies, be sure to come with water, snacks, and food. The lines get very long inside the convention floor. Don’t let the sensory overload or excitement of the convention make you forget the basics of hydration and keeping your energy high.

Bring a Camera.
I always come back from Comic Con very inspired and ready to work. Be sure to save those memories with a camera.

Kel Mitchell was part of a powerful pairing, the other half being SNL’s Kenan Thompson. Their show Kenan and Kel on Kick was absolutely kick-ass – almost nobody noticed it was basically a remake of Dobie Gillis. Kel never seemed to get the break Kenan did, and that’s a shame, as he’s damn funny. All that was the second best kids comedy troupe show Nick ever had, the best being the all-but-forgotten Roundhouse.

Looking forward to hearing why he’s on the panel – has he got something to flog, something to say, or is Michael just a fan?

And don’t forget Martha Thomases’ most important advice – bathe.

“Reprise the theme song and roll the credits!”

If you’re going to bring a backpack and fill it with swag, please keep it’s volume in mind. As you walk across the floor and stop or turn suddenly, your backpack will inevitably hit me in the face. And, even though I’m a pacifist, I will want to kill you. If I’m tired enough, I just might.

Ok…i think I’m set with this guide! It will be the only guide i reference!

The Black Panel = Must See Comic-Con!! That is a great line up! I agree with Vinnie, Kel is funny! I was actually surprised when I saw Kenan on SNL without Kel. I’m looking forward to hear what he’s up to!

Martha, I hate when that happens! If you need back up.. holla!

I recommend you bring plenty of Effexor, Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac, Valium, Xanax or Zoloft. In fact, I think SDCC should set up gumball dispensers that sell the stuff at a quarter a hit. I guarantee they’ll make a fortune.

Oh, and a flame thrower will help. You can sneak it in if you dress up as one of the Ghostbusters. I’m setting fire to anybody who hits me in the face with their backpack.

@Vinnie – “Looking forward to hearing why he’s on the panel – has he got something to flog, something to say, or is Michael just a fan?”

Kel Mitchell and Michael Davis have a few projects together. I would tell you what they were, but I’d have to join the witness protection program if said something before Michael did!

And you are right, Kel is an amazing talent. I’ve witnessed it first hand. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

@Martha- Great point! I’ll be right along with you on the defense line if any oversized novelty bag or backpack hits me.

The oversized novelty bags are a hoot – I remember the GIANT (like 3-foot square) Superman/Doomsday bage they gave away. People were joking that someone could make a dress out of one. By the end of the con, someone had, and it looked damn fine. http://tinyurl.com/n3fpkj

Yes, Ms. Tatiana I love your survival guide but don’t forget to follow your own advice in regards to “Don’t let the sensory overload or excitement of the convention make you forget the basics of hydration and keeping your energy high”. You need food and water!!!

I have been there and I can see why people get overwhelmed you don’t know where or who to look at there is so much to see. Also, be careful when you stop to look because the person behind you might not be looking and run right into you.
This is when the bag full of stuff comes in handy as a defense weapon.

I love Martha’s advice (leave it to a mother to give this advise) about bathing because crowds, heat, sweat, not bathing don’t mix.

Black Panel is the BEST look who is on the panel the one and only “Master of the Universe”.

How many cons? Divide the number of programs by the number of programs a person could attend, then add one for the floor. That’s how many. Perhaps this is a violation of the Peabody and Sherman Anti-Trust Act.

I will miss the San Diego Comic Con this year, just like every other year. I don’t have the money, connections or free time to go and that is a shame. Because this year, more than most, there are so many people that I would like to meet or reconnect with there.

If you see any of these folks at the convention, please say, “Hi, from Russ Rogers”:

Michael J. Nelson, is a buddy from college. We were in a band and have done some comedy projects together. He’s the leader of RiffTrax.com (a spin-off of Mystery Science Theater 3000). They have a huge, RiffTrax Live event planned for August 20. They’ll be Riffing on “Plan 9 From Outer Space” in a theater in Nashville and broadcasting live to 433 movie theaters across the country. http://www.ncm.com/Fathom/Comedy/RiffTrax.aspx

Mark Wheatley, is a writer and artist, currently producing “Lone Justice: Crash,” over at ComicMix.com. He will be signing Ashcan copies of Lone Justice at the Insight Studios booth. He’ll also be promoting new print editions of “Hammer of the Gods” and “Frankenstein Mobster” which are coming soon from IDW/ComicMix.

The Heroes of LuckyLegendary.com. This is CosPlay in reverse. The Legends are a group of heroes that started with the actors in costume and have become a web site and web comic and a series of YouTube videos. The team leader is Captain Lucky. The Elven Archer, Leawyn and the hero Justice are both aspiring actresses who also play Superheroes on Hollywood Boulevard. Jennifer “Justice” Wenger was featured in the movie, “Confessions of a Superhero.” The Legends have done some red carpet and charity events, and they’ve been kind enough to feature a couple of my songs on their site. And I know they will be out in force at SDCC.

And of course Tatiana, I would love to meet you and Michael Davis and the other friends I have made by being a fan of ComicMix and Michael Davis World. Any chance of coming to the Minnesota FallCon, the friendliest, most laid back little Comics Convention in the world? October 10 & 11, 2009 10AM to 5PM. http://www.mncba.com/

Oh well. At least I get to live vicariously through my friend’s tweets, photos, blogs and articles about the SDCC! Have a great time.
