Party On Garth… and Leroy, by Michael Davis – Straight No Chaser #125

I love a good party.
Man, DO I L O V E a good party!
I won’t take this opportunity to plug my forthcoming book, Everything you always wanted to know about black people but are afraid to ask..
But black people and white people define ‘party’ different.
OK, let me qualify that statement before I get a few dozen comments on that declaration.
Ready?
In MY opinion white people and black people define ‘party’ differently.
In the white definition a party has, booze, booze, some more booze and maybe a guy sitting at a piano taking requests. Think 1950’s movie where the hostess comes in and sits or leans on the piano bench and someone says; “Hey Sally how about a song?” Right about then the entire room joins in the demand and Sally reluctantly answers the call with a voice that sounds like she could be on Broadway…but in the film she’s just a simple housewife married to Rock Hudson.
Housewife, married to Rock Hudson…way to easy.
Oh Hell, I can’t resist…here’s the 2009 plot for a 1950’s era film…
Sally (Doris Day) is married to Tom (Rock Hudson) and they are having some problems. It seems that Tom never wants to make ‘whoopee’ with Sally and he spends a great deal of time with someone named Pat, behind Sally’s back. Sally thinks the problem is another woman…BOY is she happy when she finds out that Pat is another man!!
The movie is called ‘Pat from behind.’
Hey I told you, way to easy.
At a ‘black’ party first and foremost there is a dance floor and a DJ. Now to be fair some white parties have a dance floor, but for some reason white people like ‘live bands.’
Let me be very clear on this subject…
LIVE BANDS SUCK TO DANCE TO.
That brings me to MY parties at Comic Con. When I throw a party you best come to…
P A R T Y.
That means dance, drink, and dance, dance DANCE! There will be plenty of opportunity to get some Marvel Comics Editor in a corner and talk about The Hulk. But mainly it’s to have a great time and dance your ass off!
Most Comic Con parties will have a LOT of alcohol, very little if any dancing and a great many of these conversations ‘I think the Hulk can beat Superman…’
Ugh.
Soooooo when I see you (and I hope I do) at my party on the Saturday night of the convention I hope to see you shake a tail feather and just let go. We can talk about rater the Hulk can beat Superman another time!
BTW-Superman would beat the shit out of the Hulk, so now that-that’s settled we can just dance.

Considering I am afflicted with “White Guy Syndrome” – symptoms include poor hand-eye coordination and a complete absence of rhythm, not sure if I’d be a welcome guest at an MOTU party (which I guess would be a bash that makes Mardi Gras look like an Amish tea party). If I ever go to San Diego, that would definitely be the highlight of the weekend. Have fun!

“LIVE BANDS SUCK TO DANCE TO”
There’s a point there – mainly because you tend to want to listen to a live band, as opposed to a record which is just background sound to dance to.
Your description of white parties is more a description of old people’s parties. White people today have the same kind of parties as black people (loud, alcohol and hormone-soaked) with only one major difference.
White people will always try to sing along to the songs, more so as the night plods on.

I would love to be invited to this party, but first I need to be invited to a hotel room.

Live bands suck to dance to? I submit The Roots as the counter to that.

Vinnie, I’ll vouch for the “sing along”. At a friend’s wedding recently, with an open bar, quite a few people thought they could sing and proceeded to do so. There’s a reason someone on the record is singing – so you don’t have to!

I’d kill to be at SDCC and the MOTU POTU (Party of the Universe). But as it stands I’ll be stuck in my apartment, working on our book, sighing whilst the cool kids get their dance on with MOTU. Maybe I will toss on a little dance music of my own in tribute.
And the hulk isn’t even in Superman’s zip code, in terms of power.
And if you do see a marvel editor in the corner of the room, say “Unshaven Comics… man are you guys missing out.”
Enjoy the MOTU POTU!

Vinnie,
Did you not see my statement;”In MY opinion white people and black people define ‘party’ differently.’?
I still think that at Comic Con the majority of the parties are ‘stand, drink and talk.’ But I will agree with you that white people can indeed shake a tail feather on occasion.

Art,
The Roots don’t play parties dude. Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rocking Eve being the exception but that is not a REAL party. That’s like saying All My Children’s Pine Valley is a real town.
Vinnie had a great point about live bands, people watch (because they suck) remember American Bandstand? When DC was playing the hits people were dancing when the act came out people stopped to look. Some danced…if you can call it that.

@MOTU: Setting up straight lines in part of my job description. And it would thrill me to be called “easy.”

Since I wasn’t invited to this year’s mOTu throw down (sniiiifff) … I’m just gonna jam to the following all by my lonesome.

Money bet that this will be one of the jams. What sayest thou, mOTu? Wooof!
P.S. It is my committed plan to do whatever is necessary to make the cut for next year’s bash.

I didn’t want to go to SDCC until this very post. Now I’m heartbroken that I can’t go. You’ve got to promise you’ll play at least one Cheryl Lynn song.

Wow!
How’d you guys all get these comments in, not to mention the ability to read the posts?
Every night, I’d go to the site, and would have nothing more than Mike Gold’s Sarah Palin from JULY 6 looking back at me.
Maybe I’m not old enough for the party…
