Downward White Christian Soldiers, by Mike Gold – Brainiac On Banjo #162

Constance McMillen, a lesbian student in Jackson Mississippi, wanted to attend her high school prom and bring another woman as her date. In an attempt to provide appropriate schooling and fight bigotry and discrimination, the County School District cancelled the prom.

So now, in addition to taking all the crap uncloseted gay and lesbian high school students routinely take, all the little homophobes blame Constance for cancelling their prom and have made her life even more miserable. That’s just awesome. The emotional damage to Constance and her date is horrendous, but the statement the school is making to its charges is even worse. Kids are kids, but teachers are adults. In this case, they are adult hate mongers.

Parallel to this story, both in tone and in timing, comes word of the “edits” the state of Texas is demanding in their textbooks. They want Thomas Jefferson’s role severely diminished, particularly the parts about separation of church and state. They want America to be referred to as a “constitutional republic” and never, ever define the American form of government as “democratic.” They don’t want hip-hop noted as a significant cultural movement. They don’t want it noted that Tejanos died at the Alamo alongside Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.

They want the official Southern version of the Civil War reported in their textbook. Excuse me, I mean the War Between The States. No, wait. I mean the War of Yankee Aggression. So much about history being written by the winners.

Why is this a big deal? Texas is a big state, school districts all across the nation are virtually if not actually bankrupt, and textbook sales are way down. In the best of times, textbook publishers cannot afford to publish customized history books for every hate group in power. If you can’t sell your textbooks in Texas, you’re out of business.

Georgia Representative Paul Broun, said on the floor of the House of Representatives “If ObamaCare passes, that free insurance card that’s in people’s pockets is gonna be as worthless as a Confederate dollar after the War Between The States – the Great War of Yankee Aggression.” Georgia seceded from the Union because Abraham Lincoln was elected president. Well, horseshit tinged in nostalgia is still horseshit.

Even so, I think Lincoln was wrong; we should have let the south go. Not only was there no constitutional ground to force the expatriates back, but given 145 years worth of hindsight, it is clear we are two separate nations with two separate and irreconcilable views of morality.

The Christian Conservatives have no clue as to the values that make the United States of America. These are the values that our children are fighting for in wars all across the globe, and have fought for ever since 1776. They think this is a Christian nation – it isn’t, and never ever has been, and that’s been on purpose. They want everybody’s children to be raised according to their white reactionary racist homophobic beliefs.

And they’re winning. Friends, this is America in 2010. As Frank Zappa said over 40 years ago, “Scab of a nation, driven insane.”

The kids of the school got to have their prom at a furniture store. Constance got a 30,000 schlarship from Ellen, was invited to numerous soirees in California, and is generally being played as a national hero, while her howetown is being protrayed as having less brain cells than the cast of Jersey Shore. Who won?

The South has something weighing on itself that the rest of America didn’t have for over a century and change later – they lost a major war. America never had that feeling till Vietnam (and Iraq, depending on your mindset on how that’s going) and it still stings. The main reason the south hangs onto the Stars ‘n’ Bars is that feeling of loss. Texas still refers to itself as the Lone Star State, a reference to THEIR attempt to secede and its short-lived flag with only one (big-ass) star on it. A great deal of their adherence to their social practices may be simple stubbornness.

America is a land of contradictions. freedom of religion is one of its most important rights, and yet we have constant mention of (a) God in our most charished documents. What’s getting forgotten of late is we get the best stuff done when all those contradictions work together to create something new. Too many people are creating too many little camps, building walls and trying to claim they’re the real America. No, the real America are the open spaces between those camps where people can meet and work together.

This week’s post heath care vote columns are gonna be epic. There’s a good chance that Glenn or Rush will actually die on air, of either a burst blood vessel or a ruptured tear duct.

@Vinnie: But her hometown DOES have less brain cells than the cast of Jersey Shore. Unless your point is, as Stephen Colbert says, that facts have a liberal bias.

All the little camps are your brothers and sisters, banding together to seek protection from the bullies who would push them off the cliff.

If my name was dragged across the media at that age, proper compensation would be in the millions.

Vietnam wasn’t a major war. We had cars and shoes all the way through. It was a political misadventure, a deadly one. A way for rich people to get richer while some poor (or slow) folks went and got kilt. Sound familiar?

The health care plan is better titled the Republican Health Insurance Protection Act Confirming the Terrorist Victory and American Descent into Fear. There is nothing in it that resembles a progressive, liberal, small-d democratic program, or what used to pass for American values.

If you ain’t got yours, you’d best look elsewhere, buddy. America is broke, as in busted, as in doesn’t work anymore. See you in Grand Cayman. Stingray City is great this time of year.

@Vinnie: Yep, Constance got a grant from Ellen. Actually, through Ellen, but why split hairs, 30Gs is nice. And she’s getting her 15 minutes. All because she stood up for herself, and I think that’s great. Her school masters look like idiots to those who think sex discrimination is bad, and they look like heroes to those who support sex discrimination. No change there.

But you’d have to ask Constance if it was worth it. All she wanted were the same rights and privileges her classmates enjoy.

I don’t get the title to this? Are Christians responsible for homophobia? Are Muslims more accepting of homosexuals? Are Blacks or other races more accepting of homosexuals than Whites? Is there less homophobia among Black Christians? Or Philippino Muslims?

I think Christians were among to boldest leaders of the abolitionist movement. Christian leaders have been among the boldest of the Civil Rights Movement. Christians have often been on the cutting edge of social justice issues too. Not just Black Christians, White Christians as well.

Why are White Christians being lambasted in the headline of this piece as the bastion of segregation, discrimination, secession and repressive thought? What is the connection between Constance’s Prom, Texas school books and the Christian Church?

I saw Constance on Ellen. She seemed like a shy girl who would gladly trade her $30,000 scholarship for a normal prom with her date and not have so much fuss. She got a $30,000 scholarship in part because she has a 3.8 GPA too! She deserves a scholarship. That scholarship wasn’t just because she has shown a lot of courage and grace under the pressure of Media Attention and a closed-minded local school board. She wouldn’t have gotten it if she didn’t have the grades and potential to back it up.

I just don’t see how this article makes the connection between these various things and “White Christians.”

@Russ: All white Christians are not bigots, nor are all bigots white Christians. However, in this specific case, all the bigots involved are white Christians.

It’s like when you studied sets in math. A and B might be different sets, but there can be a place where A intersects B.

Also, I’m willing to bet that these goons think they are acting like Christians. It’s up to true Christians to (you should pardon the expression) set them straight.

This is the America we live in. Where hate is collected like pokemon cards… And stories in our media seek to make it all black and white. Good and bad. Evil and Heroic. To give an education guess to a pair of your questions Russ:

Why are White Christians being lambasted in the headline of this piece as the bastion of segregation, discrimination, secession and repressive thought?

Mike’s title is meant to grab attention. He uses “White Christian” as Martha points out, because it was the white christian sect of people who in this case harbor feelings of segregation (no openly gay kids at prom.), discrimination (no openlu gay kids at prom), secession and repressive thought (no gays at prom, thus “saving” the non gay students from having to view that vile and ungodly act of a gay couple enjoying their time together. But besides being backed by fact, the title is a title Russ: it gets our attention, whether it’s 100% true, or a variation/satire/parody of it.

What is the connection between Constance’s Prom, Texas school books and the Christian Church?

In these two cases (Prom and the School Books) the objections being raised (Should gay kids be allowed to openly have a relationship in a public school? Can a state have history books editorialized to fit a particular shared view that is different from other similar texts?) are being raised largely by groups of Christians.

As discussed before, at great length mind you, Mike Gold is a highly opinionated guy who likes to poke and prod and rant and rail against those groups that would stand in the way of the basic freedoms we as a people should be able to enjoy. Be we gay or straight, christian, jewish, or kryptonian… And when these freedoms are denied.. He reports it. Whether you choose to believe his editorial columns are bathed in bias or the truth it your personal choice… and generally calling Mike out on it, to back himself up… well.. We who generally read and respond to these columns kinda “get” what’s going on. So are you genuinely confused by Mike’s phrasing, or are you trying to make him rescind his column and never let a harsh word fall upon a christian topic again?

Russ, since Martha and Marc waxed so eloquently, I will focus on two statements of yours. Since my argument is about the South, I am going to continue in that spirit.

You state “I think Christians were among the boldest leaders of the abolitionist movement.” If you’re saying a lot of or most of the Southern abolitionists were Christians, fine. I’ll agree. A lot of or most of all Southerns were and are Christians. But goddamn, bro, they were a fart in a blizzard of white southern Christian advocates of slavery that were so fanatical they were willing to commit several acts of treason and succeed from the Union and take arm against what was their nation. Unfortunately, they did not succeed. Worse, they still haven’t gotten over it. War of Northern Aggression, indeed.

You ask “Are Christians responsible for homophobia?” Ummm… well, yes they are. There aren’t enough Muslems in the South to make a difference, and here white Christians and black Christian homophobes are united.

I’ve read their hate-filled bible that calls for the murder of homosexuals. I’ve read their hate-filled placards. I’ve seen them at the funerals of gay servicemen and women. I’ve seen them destroy the careers of gay men and women. I’ve seen the Christian governor and attorney general of Virginia, a southern state, waste not a single DAY in stripping homosexuals of their rights to equal employment and THEN conduct a witch hunt to ferret gays and lesbians out of their schools.

These are the public actions that define Southern Christianity in America today. It’s not a conspiracy of the north or of the liberals or of the commies; it is what all too many southern Christians say and what all too many southern Christians do. They are fighting aggressively for what they define as America, what they believe (and, boy, are they full of shit) as a Christian nation.

In the process they have conducted a jihad against that which defends their hateful beliefs, and they’ve done a great deal of damage and they have made it perfectly clear they have no intention of stopping. Their bigotry knows no bounds.

If, as you seem to imply, this is a small group of Christians that are not representative of the whole, then I ask why don’t you good people do something about it? These people are at least tolerated, often encouraged, and all too often elected to office.

    And they’re well armed.

But, at least, they’re not alone in that.

Excerpts from this article that ran today:

“McMillen wanted to bring a same-sex date to her prom. After the school canceled the April 2 event, she faced criticism from her classmates and peers. Despite not having much support in her community, a facebook group supporting her cause has well over 384,000 fans.”

“In court documents filed last week, McMillen says she was told that she and her girlfriend could not attend prom together by the school’s assistant principal, who also suggested that the two just go with “guys.” ”

“A private, “discriminatory” prom has been set up at the request of the school to substitute for the canceled event. According to a report at DallasVoice.com, McMillen is not invited.”

Clearly, these misguided folks do need some assistance. Last I checked, the definition of lesbian includes the thought that one is attracted to another woman. Kinda precludes going with a guy. Think any of these idiot savants would enjoy a raw hot dog if they ordered a cod fillet?

Kudos to you guys–and Martha for your wise words.

I never understood what’s it to ’em. I dunno. Some people don’t like redheads. Go figure. If it were simply a gross sexual thing, as in “You don’t wanna fuck me? Well, then, fuck you!” I’d understand it on that level. But it goes way beyond that.

I’ll counter your Frank with my Bugs: “Wotta buncha maroons!”

I’ve said it many times I’m gay, I’m a lesbian. That said hate has no place in the world period. I still cannot get my mind around why people give a fudge about what other people do in the confines of their own lives.

Homophobia crosses ethnic and religious barriers. Just because much of the South is White and Christian, that does not mean “White Christians” organized the bigotry against Constance McMillen. It was the Itawamba County School District that canceled the prom. It was a public school, not a Christian school. Was the idea to have her school change it’s prom plans led by prominent Christian leader in Constance’s community? I couldn’t find any stories with details like that. Or are you just assuming that because this is a small, Southern town, this is all playing out like a scene from “Footloose”? What’s the point of just tossing in assumed details on the story?

What Christian denomination is Representative Paul Broun? Yeah, he said some stupid stuff. But it wasn’t Christian Stupid. It was Southern/Republican Stupid! Wow! I just read Paul Broun’s Wikipedia page. That guys kookier than Michelle Bachmann!

I don’t know if they are Christian, but I’ll lay odds that most of the Itawamba County School District Board is Republican!
