Get the F Out, by Arthur Tebbel – Pop Art #90

Dear Art,

This past week Tony Dungy criticized me in the press for using the f-word too many times in the first episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks series covering the New York Jets.  Dungy even went as far as to suggest that I should be fined and censured by the NFL for my language.  Is this an appropriate response?  Should I consider changing the way I coach my team based on this criticism?

-Rex Ryan, Head Coach, New York Jets

Rex,

Don’t you fucking dare change the way you coach that team.  You took the New York Jets, the saddest bunch of fucks to ever play football, all the way to the AFC Championship Game last season.  That’s an outstanding accomplishment.  If that’s the way you feel comfortable communicating with that team you keep at it.  Fuck Tony Dungy.  Fuck him in his stupid ass.

Fine you?  Censure you?  For the way you talk to a group of fucking adults?  That would be completely fucked.  Every one in the locker room could see an R-rated movie for fuck’s sake.  Your language can’t be any worse than that.  Maybe if you were coaching a bunch of kids in a fucking Pop Warner league he’d be on to something but not like this.

Furthermore, Tony Dungy has some fucking balls.  Yeah he one a Super Bowl with a Colts team that was loaded to fuck and back but he hasn’t exactly been without his flaws.  He couldn’t win worth a fuck damn back in Tampa Bay.  His big project last season was getting Michael Vick back into the league.  Foul language is a no but torture and murder animals and Tony Dungy has your fucking back covered.

Hard Knocks is not a commercial for the NFL; it’s a documentary series.  It is supposed to present things as they really happen.  The Jets were a surprise team last season and were selected for this show to reveal some of why they got so good.  Part of that has to be attributed to their coach, their coach who likes to say fuck.  If the NFL wants to present themselves as a league where no one ever uses coarse language then they should tell HBO to fuck off when it comes time to renew that contract.  They shouldn’t punish you for being yourself when you’re doing your job.  You aren’t a spokesman; you’re a coach, and a fucking fine coach at that.
