“Re-Sweet: @RockingJamboree” by Russ Rogers – Musings on a Song #7

Submitted for your perusal and approval:  We Sing Your Tweets.   Is it a band?  Is it a public service?  It is what it says it is.  Two guys turn tweets into songs, song-tweets or as they call them “Sweets.”  When they turn other people’s tweets into Sweets, they call that Re-Sweeting or a Re-Sweet.

The concept is simple, tweets turned into tiny songs.  Kevyn Smith and Jeremy Johnson, of the band “Dave Hates Chico,” took a break one day from recording in the studio to write and post a few “Sweets.”  That was about six months ago.  Since then, they have written and posted over 500 sweets.

There’s no business model.  It’s not a money making enterprise.  It’s like twitter itself.  Right now, We Sing Your Tweets is just building a following and a fan base.  They tend to Re-Sweet a lot of famous people, people with large twitter followings.  There have been some articles about them.  National Geographic had them create Sweets from their own Top tweets of 2010.
In December, Jimmy Kimmel had Josh Groban sing several tweets on his show.  It was a blatant rip-off of the comedic concept that We Sing Your Tweets had already staked out!   Were they angry?  No.  They just Sweeted Jimmy Kimmel and Josh Groban and moved on.  Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I discovered We Sing Your Tweets after they Sweeted a friend of mine, comedian Jackie Kashian.  She retweeted their re-sweet.  I caught it and was fascinated by the concept.  I have great respect for people like Jonthan “Song a Day” Mann, who can consistently crank out song after song.  In the case of We Sing Your Tweets, they’ll regularly deliver 10 to 20 Sweets in an evening.  They are surprisingly diverse.  Sometimes funny.  Sometimes thoughtful.  Sometimes just weird.

When I decide that I’m a fan of someone or something I can become obsessively loyal.  Especially with content that is being produced for FREE.   If I watch a YouTube video or read a blog post, it’s rare that I don’t at least click the thumbs up or leave a comment.  I know how much that kind of small acknowledgement means to me, so I try to take the time to do it for other people.

Consequently, over the last few months I’ve commented a LOT on We Sing Your Tweet.  They had promised, warned or threatened that one of my tweets would due to get the Re-Sweet treatment.  Somehow, when I tweeted, “Bullion is beef flavored salt,” I suspected that would be the one I would hear back in song.
