You’ve Got a Friend in Me, by Martha Thomases – Brilliant Disguise

There’s a lot of real important stuff happening in the world this week, things worthy of serious analysis and discussion.
We lost one of the great ones, but that’s too sad for me to talk about.
The people of the world continue to rise up against dictators, including this really crazy one.
The people in this country continue to rise up against dictators, including those who may be duly elected but who seem to think that a majority vote means they don’t have to compromise.
And a nut-job feels entitled to malign my people.
These are all important things to discuss. And yet, they are issues too complex for me to tackle fairly or intelligently in a blog post. Instead, I’m going to talk about what’s really on my mind.
Years ago, I read an article that said, for businesses that market to women, the Oscars were at least as important as the Super Bowl. SInce then, I’ve watched the commercials avidly, hoping that the female demographic would be valuable enough to inspire competitive creativity. It hasn’t. Revlon and L’Oreal might make ads that are beautifully produced and photographed, but they don’t push the envelope.
I watch to see what the celebrities are wearing. This, too, is less fun than the Super Bowl. There was a time when celebrities would dress themselves, and someone like Geena Davis would wear something goofy and fun. Now, everyone uses stylists and, while mistakes might be avoided, it’s so much less interesting.
Hence, I’m left with the competition within the show itself. In an ideal world, I spend the week between Christmas and New Year going to the movies, catching up on the films with Oscar buzz. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do that this year. Of the ten nominated films, I’ve only seen Toy Story 3, Inception, and True Grit. I’ve tried to rouse myself to see The Fighter and 127 Hours, but they seem like too much of a downer for me to get off the couch, especially when, with the same effort, I can see Cedar Rapids, which I really can’t recommend highly enough.
Under these circumstances, why will I watch this year? James Franco! Not only is he cute and talented, but he seems like an amazing role model. Not content to be a successful actor, he is studying for a doctorate at Yale and turned down TV time because he had to go to class. At a time when some people will pimp out their kids to be on television, this is refreshing indeed.
People who know her tell me that Anne Hathaway is also a sweetie-pie.
So, if you want to reach me on Sunday, call before 8 PM Eastern time. We may have pizza or beer, like a Super Bowl party, or popcorn and wine, like a girl-fest, but we’ll be watching.

John, I don’t think White Heat is eligible this year. But it should be.
Martha, Mr. Beck does not seem to understand the definition of the word “reform.” Go figure. He knows that shit ain’t Christian, and that’s all he cares about until somebody sues him serious and he hires a Jew lawyer to defend him.
Think Anne and James will use the opening Ricky Gervais wrote for them?

Okay, I’m gonna let my prejudices rule: I’m rooting hard for the lesbian moms…

@Mike: Much as I love Ricky Gervais, I don’t think the Oscar audience cares that much about his Golden Gloves gig.

Martha, I think maybe you meant Golden Globes, although I don’t understand why ANYBODY cares about the Golden Globes. On the other hand, were Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Gloves, oh lordy lordy, I’d be there in a heartbeat with Belz on.

Martha, I trust you will agree that Toy Story 3 was absolutely magical.
Inception…I’ll let you know after I see it again. :-p
I hear the Coen boys did it again with the Big Lebowski.
@ Mike…I think Franco REJECTED Gervais’ not so kind offer to help out.

Christians that are antisemitic are some of the dumbest individuals.
“The King’s Speech” is my pick this year. As someone with a speech impediment, it resonated with me and I thought the script took the subject matter seriously. Quality acting and cinematography.

But having said that, I’m looking forward to Joan River’s annual knife dance.
And Battle: L.A. Not that it’ll be up for the Oscar’s next year, but because I’m interested in seeing how the mOTu saves the day.
Then again, he probably brought ’em here just for giggles.

@ Jeremiah…True that. I’ve always had to scratch my head at that little disconnect.

Amazing Martha –
Hope I’ll get to see the Oscars with my family. But my peace-loving Canadian father goes red with paternal jealousy over Anne Hathaway. He can’t understand why she is more rich and famous than his beautiful daughters. When commercials for her flick came on TV, he’d snort, “HOMELY!”, and storm out of the room.
I don’t understand it, but it’s great to have unreasonable support.

Reg, the whole thing was a gag. Gervais wrote up a phony “monologue” about himself (that’s what he does) and released it. It wasn’t offered to anybody but the public.
Oh, and Martha, I don’t think the people at the Oscars think of anything but themselves. The Oscars broadcast became the politically correct Miss America Pagent a long time ago.

What? Is Bob Hope not hosting the Oscars anymore?

Or, as it’s known in the Hope household, Passover.

Another year another shutout of Crank 2. I don’t know how long the good people of the world can be expected to put up with this injustice.

@Arthur: Just saw the first CRANK on USA. Even with the cursing cut (and who knows how much actual sex), it was awesome. And that was without puppets.
