Let’s Bushwhack A Veteran, by Mike Gold – Brainiac On Banjo #212

I’ll warn you upfront. This one does not have a happy ending.
The last Civil War veteran died when I was five years old. That confused me as the Civil War had preceded my birth by nearly 90 years. My father helped me with the math and I better understood that Union soldier Albert Woolson had died at the age of 109.
I’m reminded of this because the final surviving American World War I veteran died last week. Marine Frank Buckles lived one year longer than Mr. Woolson. I’m still amazed. World War I ended 91 years ago.
As a civilian well after the Armistice, Buckles found himself on business in the Philippines in 1941. He was captured by the Japanese and spent more than three years in prison camps. He was a Prisoner of War in a war in which he was not a combatant, but he was another American veteran who was held in captivity.
Buckles came a political activist in 2008 when he was merely 107 years old. He dedicated his final years to gaining greater recognition of his long-gone brothers-in-arms. Think about that for a second. We still do not have a national monument honoring those who fought in the “war to end all wars,” as it was called until the bloody sequel came along.
Frank Buckles is to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This required an executive order from President George W. Bush; Buckles didn’t quite meet the criteria necessary for burial at Arlington. At least his service as an ununiformed POW was recognized. That’s the good news.
Here’s the bad news: Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin wanted to honor Buckles by allowing his remains to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. That would be a great recognition to all Americans who served in the Great War, to all Americans who served in any war, and, by the way, to all Americas.
This patriotic act was brought to a stop by Speaker of the House John Boehner.
Boehner, who is quick to shed a tear for those causes that are embraced by the Hard Right and inure to the benefit of his political career, has no such emotion for American war veterans. The most he would do was express an intent to ask Defense Secretary Robert Gates to allow the to use the amphitheater at Arlington cemetery for his memorial service. Maybe he’ll reconsider – if he hasn’t, then this anti-American son-of-a-bitch should be sent to Afghanistan.
In case you’re interested, Speaker Boehner’s office phone number is (202) 225-6205. Give ‘em a call. Tell ‘em what you think. Ask ‘em if Boehner hates all those who have served their country or if he simply has a thing against super-centenarian Marines who served our country in one world war and served as a POW in the next.
In dying, at least Frank Buckles accomplished his life’s goal: his grave will serve as the temporary memorial to those who risked their lives in one of the most horrific events in our nation’s history.
My hat’s off to you, Frank. Let’s help him out: check out www.wwimemorial.org.

In this case, it’s pretty obvious Speaker Boehner pulled a boner.
Hopefully he’ll see the error of his ways and relent.
In the meantime, THE best WW I monument I’ve ever seen (and one of the best war monuments of ANY type I’ve seen anywhere), is in downtown Indianapolis. If the federal government had any brains, they’d partner with Indianapolis and work out some way to nationalize that monument — taking over the funding for upkeep, etc.
Then again, perhaps Hoosier vets wouldn’t be very happy about letting the federal government coming in to “help.”

You know, Russ, you’re absolutely right. I haven’t seen that monument in Indianapolis for a couple decades, but now that you mention it I’ve got it straight in my mind’s eye. A memorable memorial indeed.

Done and done. Called, and left a salty little message. What a pleasure to know douchebaggery is still rampant in our nation.

It is absolutely stunning — both inside and out. I love the classical architecture, the design, the view — everything. It is an amazing and solemn place to spend an afternoon.

I guess his patriotism only extends to the point where he can garner more funding for the various “campaign contributors” in the defense industry.

I’m gonna make a wild guess here –
Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin are…Democrats?
Yep, just looked it up.
In our new (okay, not that new) political climate, ANY idea by the other party must be opposed. Agreeing with anyone on the other side of the aisle is a sign of weakness, and shows you cannnot be trusted. It’s been getting worse in the last few years, and getting more pronounced with each shift of power.
Bob Dole and many other Republicans disagree on this one, but alas, changing your mind is almost as bad as siding with the enemy in the first place. He’s stuck – he’s gonna have to craft some scenario where he “bows to the wishes of the public” without actually coming off as weak.
If a Republican senator had thought of it, they’d be sending out the invitations as we speak. If no senator has thought of it, There’s none of them that would know the guy’s name.

Boner is an asshole, we’ve known that for a long time. What’s a real fucking disgrace is the lack of major coverage of, and outrage about this insult to the memory of ALL war heroes. Where is Fox “News” and all of the people who have been rallying to “support” the troops for most of the last decade? Where are the real news organizations? This is a time for everyone that styles themselves as a supporter of our active military to actually do something to support our veterans. Even if its only symbolically and for one man; but maybe it will get more people to think about what we owe the men and women who have sacrificed so much for the rest of us. Especially the ones who sacrificed in in needles causes started by politicians trying to make themselves look good.

OK, I left a message on Boner’s voice mail and called my rep’s office saying that the situation was disgraceful. Unfortunately my Congressman is Issa, since he can’t make money or attack a Democrat off of this issue, I don’t expect much action. Everyone who’s motivated to call Boner, please call your own Congressman. Put as much pressure on the Speaker as possible.

Doug, it’s an insult to us all. If we cannot honor those who risk their lives to protect us and make our lives better, no matter what the war or what the cause, no matter if they are military, police, firefighters, teachers, EMS workers, nurses; no matter if it is their choice or their circumstance… if we cannot honor these people and what they stand for, then we have no business calling ourselves part of the human race.
“Humanity” is not a political concept.

There are worse people in Congress than Issa. What he will not do in public he most certainly can do in private.

Hey, where the heck is our friend, ‘Better Red Than Dead’ lately? I miss his/her point of views on this type of stuff.

Let me try. “No. Wrong. You’re way off-base here. Isn’t a boner (Boehner) in itself a kind of salute? Another non-story here.”

To R. Maheras Re: Speaker Boehner needing to ‘…relent…’
I think a better word is ‘repent’.

It’s really great to see folks taking action on this one. This issue is the definition of respect.
I’m writing ahead a bit ‘cuz I’ll be in Chicago next week at the R2D2 (or, whatever) convention at McCormick Place, so I just finished my draft for next week. It’s pretty venomous… An astonishing evil… You know, the usual.
Except I’m REAL pissed.
