Premature Babies Saved By Feds, By Mike Gold – Brainiac On Banjo UPDATE

In Brainiac On Banjo #213 several weeks ago, I detailed how K-V Pharmaceutical of Missouri won exclusive government approval to sell hydroxyprogesterone caproate. It’s a drug that saves the lives of premature babies. Before K-V got this boon, the stuff went for $15.00 a hit. After K-V got this boon, the price jumped up to $1,500.00 a hit.
For a few weeks.
I am happy to report that the FDA reversed itself. Pharmacies can once again make and sell inexpensive, generic versions of the premature birth drug.
“In order to support access to this important drug, at this time and under this unique situation, FDA does not intend to take enforcement action against pharmacies that compound hydroxyprogesterone caproate based on a valid prescription for an individually identified patient unless the compounded products are unsafe, of substandard quality, or are not being compounded in accordance with appropriate standards for compounding sterile products,” the FDA announced.
Score one for the good guys.

Seriously, that’s great news. Hopefully, the greedy bastards that came up with the $1500 price tag will wind up on the unemployment line.

Mike, the funny part is that I take HPC. Have for 10 years. It is made by a pharmaceutical formulary–the very kind that Big Pharma wants to shut down. With a script from an MD, licensed and regulated places like the one I’ve used for more than a decade, custom make natural hormones. The price–a whole lot less than $1,500. How about $50 for a vial that lasts 5 months. My math, $10/month. Hmmmmm….

Mike, Golden Boy –
They reversed themselves because people found out what had happened and spread the news. Like you.

Big FAT gold star for you, Darling.

As us city-dwellars who grew up living in apartment buildings all know, when you shine a light on cockroaches, they tend to run back into the crevice they crawled out of.

Whitney, seriously. I’m just the guy under the lamppost screaming his head off at stuff he doesn’t like. I’m five years away from converting that into “get off my lawn!”
But I will admit: it’s been a long while since I’ve enjoyed writing an update that much!
