The Comic Con Shuffle, by Michael Davis – Straight No Chaser #224

Every year at Comic Con I give a party. Every year at Comic Con I host the Black Panel.
PLUG!
Every year at Comic Con I spend ZERO time on the floor looking for toys, comics or DVD’s.
You would think that I’d find SOME time over four days to spend some money, to hunt for that elusive Captain Action costume or Fantastic Four #76. You would assume that somehow in 96 hours I would find ONE hour to troll the convention grounds like a fan boy on the hunt for that Honey West DVD.
Alas, no.
For a decade, more or less I’ve had NO time for anything except business.
Really.
NO TIME.
NOT this year damnit!!
HELL NO! This year I’m finding some time to be a goddamn freakin SUPER NERD GEEK FAN BOY!
Hells yes!
I’m finding that elusive Captain Action costume, I’m finding Fantastic Four #76, I’m finding that Honey West DVD or someone will die while I’m trying!
What?
Yes, I know it’s ‘I’ll die trying’ but come on, lose my life over some old ass comic book or action figure costume? Nah-I’m not THAT freakin SUPER NERD GEEK FAN BOY.
I’m the freakin SUPER NERD GEEK FAN BOY who gets laid.
Hence, I have something else to live for except being alone in my room with a Honey West DVD…and lotion.
What’s that you say? How can I really be a freakin SUPER NERD GEEK FAN BOY and not die for my beliefs?
Let’s see, dying for Fantastic Four #76 (which I’m sure I can download for free on the net) or a hot Asian love slave who will call me ‘Daddy’…long time.
Tough choice…
HOT ASIAN LOVE SLAVE! DUH!!!
BUT! I am going to find the time to spend some quality time being a freakin SUPER NERD GEEK FAN BOY!
Then, I’m hitting that…long time.

THAT’S what I’m talking about! Heck… you GOTTA go hunting for Holy Grail fan stuff at a con! That’s part of the fun!
I always take time to hunt — even if it’s only for an hour or two. And I always manage to find some great fannish loot.
Happy hunting!
Maybe we’ll bump into each other like we did last year at the CBG booth.

Vinnie,
I COULD go the Amazon route but there’s a dealer @ Comic Con who has the BEST DVD’s of old TV shows complete with special stuff added and I want to try him first. BUT-it’s good to know I have a back up, thanks!

Honey West huh? MS Francis seemed like a nice lady in interviews, but she just never did anything for me as an actress or a sex symbol. Now Barbra Feldon as Agent 99 is a TOTALLY different story. Eartha Kitt as Catwoman wasn’t too bad either. Or Julie London in Emergency!. My Mother thought that I watched those shows for the action when I was little. 🙂

mOTu, many thanks, sir! I should have some clarity by Wed. Fingers crossed.
@ Whitney…”Give it up, Sugah!”
@ Doug…”Puuuurrrffeecctt!”
Eartha embodied the spirit, but Julie ran away with the suit. Mercy.

You just explained why I dislike SDCC. Too much work, no time to enjoy myself, it’s not a comics show in the least (Francis Ford Coppola? Really?), and everybody over 50 is looking for a job.
Lucky for me, right now my doctors won’t even let me look at a PICTURE of an airplane, let alone spend four days on my feet when I can’t stand for more than a few minutes.
I enjoy the damn few REAL comics shows that are out there. I strongly recommend Baltimore. It’s only two days, and it’s pure comics. August 20 / 21. If I haven’t recovered by then, I’m not likely to.

Mike,
I spent all four days at SDCC last year and 90-95% of my time was spent on comic related activities. What wasn’t comic related usually came at the expense of a comic panel that sounded interesting. Not being in the field, I don’t have to worry about working; but I’ve heard of pros coming into town just to have fun. As Mark Evanier is fond of saying, you get out of San Diego what you put into it. I’m planning on getting all of the work I need to do to have fun, including choosing what panels I want to attend, by the end of next week. That way, once I get down there and registered, I can concentrate on having fun. Maybe next year, if you’re feeling better, you can come and concentrate enjoying yourself.

Mark’s right — and I don’t have the energy to fight the masses. I’ll do it next year, assuming I’m healthy and such, but I miss what made SDCC great fun. Keep in mind I’ve been going there for over, what, 30 years.
But I look forward to Baltimore.

Mike,
I’ll roll with you to Baltimore con next time you go. I’m doing some stuff with Diamond and I LOVE the Geppi museum. It will also give us some time to just hang.
