Let It Begin with Me, by Martha Thomases – Brilliant Disguise

My favorite event of the year happened this week, when the Winter Solstice occurred and the days started to get longer.  I know the solstice also means winter, and cold and gloom, but every day, that extra bit of day lights the way to the hope of spring and warmth.

Which we need now.  A lot.

Not everyone regards the Solstice the way I do, but most of us celebrate a holiday of some kind.  The so-called Christian majority lays claim to the season, insisting that not only is their belief the only truth, but that anyone who doesn’t agree is anti-American.  I get the first part of this.  I mean, I believe a lot of things to be true with no proof. just because I believe them.  For example, I think if I bring an umbrella with me, it won’t rain.  However, if you believe that weather is caused by a variety of meteorological phenomena, I won’t call you a terrorist.

And yet, not only is this something some Christians do, but they lie to do it.  The Florida Family Association, which demanded that Lowe’s pull its advertising from the American Muslim reality series, is actually just one guy.  Not only is he a hate-monger, but by taking the actions he has (pretending to be an association, not an individual), he violates one of his own God’s Top Ten Commandments, the one about not bearing false witness against his neighbors.

Think he’s some kind of fluke?  There are apparently so many of this kind of so-called Christians that there’s a lot of money to be made selling them stuff.  For example, just imagine the look of joy on their children’s faces when they wake up on Christmas morning and celebrate the birth of their lord by killing (virtually) their neighbors.

Luckily, because this is the United States, we are not (yet) subject to the whims of these people.  We have choices, not only about what we can believe, but what we can buy.  If you don’t like Lowe’s capitulating to bigotry, consider shopping at Home Depot for all your chain-store home improvement needs.  They recently told those narrow-minded bigots what they could do with their idiot opinions.

We make these choices every day.  We can be generous or greedy, kind or nasty, friendly or mean.  None of us has a perfect score, but we can recognize that we’re making choices, and that, while we can’t all control the weather (only my umbrella is the magic one), we can help each other stay dry.

And warm.  Which I hope you feel from my wishes for you.

Media Goddess Martha Thomases is looking forward to tulips.
