Happiness Runs, by Martha Thomases – Brilliant Disguise | @MDWorld

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for me. I had a wicked cold, which was not helped by schlepping across the country. Much as I love to visit my son and my friends, I spent the first few days looking for opportunities to sleep. I was a horrible house-guest, and a miserable human being.
That said, I’m feeling way better now. And grateful for it.
Here are a few things that make me glad to be alive:
• Coming out of the subway during a heat wave and walking into an air-conditioned apartment.
• That glorious moment when the heat breaks, and I can turn off my air-conditioning and open the window.
• Even though we have a new Anthony Weiner sex scandal, in which it seems the media is metaphorically shoving his dick into my face, there is still something really funny that New Yorkers will do to make the experience endurable.
• Sharing fresh apricots from the Green Market with my cat, who inexplicably loves them. And not sharing blueberries, because they are mine, all mine!
• Orthodox Jewish women have to wear wigs (and sometimes also scarves), long sleeves, long skirts and stockings. Orthodox Jewish men have to wear hats and wool coats. They do this for the glory of God, and I admire their devotion, I am so grateful for the Reform movement that lets me wear sleeveless short dresses and short hair. Gaze at my stubbly armpits and despair.
• This summer’s stylish colors seem to be melon-infused neons. They flatter my skin color not at all, and yet I love them. Especially on my toenails. Which also means more frequent pedicures. Which means more foot massage. Aaaaah!
* I hate to jinx things, but it looks like Obama, in his role as Charlie Brown, might finally stop trying to kick the football that Lucy (by which I mean the GOP) keeps setting up. In his most recent speech on the economy, he calls on them to actually do something. Here’s hoping that people might actually listen, even though it’s summer and the news media is almost entirely phoning it in.
• Yes, I’m a tool, but I enjoy all the news about the new Prince George Alexander Louis Windsor. He’s a baby! He has cute little fingers! Part of his name is “Louis,” which is an important name in my family, too! Until I get a grandchild of my own, I will vicariously enjoy this one from afar.
• After two weeks with a cough, it is thrilling to breathe without thinking about it. I don’t mean to go all Buddhist on you, but breathing is what it’s all about. Whatever else you might want to do,you can’t do it without breathing.
Next week, I hope to be griping again.
Media Goddess Martha Thomases highly recommends southern California in the summer over Manhattan.

I had a fresh peach last night for dessert with a bit of cinnamon sprinkled on it like my Mom taught me.
Why do we ever settle for junk food? I understand your cat’s position regarding nectarines.
One thing about New York in the summer that is superior to So Cal: More blueberries, if you can spare a patch of soil for them.
I only have four berries this year…
