MICHAEL DAVIS WORLD

You can't make this stuff up, so we don't!

Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself… by Tatiana – In The Mix #1

TatianaMy name is Tatiana and I’m an artist and designer and I work with Michael Davis on a variety of projects. One of those projects has been building this site.

Putting together this site has been a fantastic experience. The blend of some of the greatest columnists and exciting new original content has made Michael Davis World (MDW) the place to be. I’m pretty net savvy and I speak from experience when I say this site is unique.  There is a lot more groundbreaking, entertaining content coming but that’s a column for another day.

However while maintaining the site, I realized Martha Thomases was the only female columnist and brought that to Michael’s attention. To which he soundly looked at me and calmly said “ So what?”  I said I wanted a spot and he looked me up and down and said; “You’re not Asian.”  I told him neither was Martha and he told me; “No, but she has magical powers and you do not.”

Well I have something better… Access! Access to the site that is- so I’m officially bogarting a spot in the great land of MOTU and declaring Thursdays as Tatiana’s In The Mix days.

What’s Michael going to do? His technical expertise ends with the ON button.

I have nothing but respect for Michael. Since being apart of Michael’s management group, my career and artwork have grown leaps and bounds. There is something to be said about a person that can secure 25 hotel rooms a week before Comic Con, set-up a meeting with Stan Lee, and get me a development meeting at a major network- with one phone call.

This is not a fluff piece about Michael Davis, I’m merely highlighting that he rolls in high circles. Above and beyond his over the top personality, he truly believes in nurturing young talent and granting access to dedicated and promising talent who have respect and are willing to do the work. I, by all accounts, am a workaholic and proud of it. As I mentioned above I’m an artist, designer and web goddess but I have a bit of juice myself.

I’ve returned some of the favor to MOTU by introducing him to some things as well. I was instrumental in getting his artwork in the African American Heritage Month Calendar for the Mayor of Los Angeles and convinced him and Mike Gold to be a judge for the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles illustration competition, of which I’m currently the Vice President/ Show Chair. I’ve been called lucky to have been granted that access.

What people fail to realize is that while access will open the door, I have to do the work. No upper management, successful person will put their reputation or work ethic on the line for a self-entitled, lazy person.  While most of my friends are out partying and traveling, I’m a driven, strong female in my mid 20s working on building an empire and fighting for artistic acceptance in the world.

I’ve done a lot but I’m still very young and there is a whole lot more for me to do and learn. I’ve finished school, I’m building my career, and I’m In The Mix of so many different things. I hope to chronicle my journey here at MDW and invite you all to come along. I also have something to prove to Michael, who told me once; “I’ve forgotten more than you will ever know.”

We shall see Mr. Davis, we shall see…

Oh BTW, it IS just Tatiana, no last name, like Prince only taller. A lot taller!

@ McCarthy- In retrospect that is an amazing story, but while we were at Mid Ohio Con I didn’t feel worthy of my magical charm.

Tat, it’s great to share bandwidth with you!

Good job Tatiana, I am very proud of all that you have accomplished so far. You are a very determined strong minded young woman and I know you will accomplish what you set your mind to because you know what you want and you go after it.

As you said in YOUR column (Yes Michael her column) “You saw a need for more female input on MDW website” and Michael saying no did not stop you. Michael she is a strong young woman and I know you know she won’t take no for an answer once she has made up her mind.

In this world where so many people just want to take and take I must say I am very proud to know that you are not just a taker but most of all you are a giver. One of your assets is that you work hard for whatever you believe in or any organization you join. You always gives 101% of yourself because you want to see it succeed.

I have always told you have the gift of writing and I am glad you have found your niche and are willing to share your gift in this new column. Looking forward to reading your columns every Thursday.
Michael thanks for being her Mentor.
If you believe you will achieve.

    Tatiana,

Congrats! There is no doubt that what you set out to do you will accomplish as you are a determined, aggressive young female. You are the most calm workaholic I know with such an artistic flair. Can’t wait to read more of your articles and see more of your art work!

“WHAT THE FISH??? What is up with all these comments? How dare you garner a following so quick? I’m changing the passwords!!”

Huh? Is someone talking to me? I swear I heard my name. Anyways… Tatianna, let me say, congrats, and damnit I’m jealous.

Hope to read some more awesome columns coming soon from you. Keep up the good work. And I couldn’t agree more, it’s not just about the opportunity, it’s about the hard work we youngsters are willing to put in.. in order to make the best products. It’s why I worked a 43 hour shift to complete a catalog for my day job not long ago.

So, kudos, screw you I’m still jealous, and good luck! 🙂

Good on you, Tatiana. You’re the tech goddess, you amke this thing spin and dance, by all the Odd Gods of the galaxy, you deserve a spot here.

As for thee, Mighty MOTU, I’ll try to wheedle the passwords out of her if you condescend to give me a slot on here as well. You require the input of a pudgy, old, white Southerner who has no job and far too much education. Who’s been a comics and sf geek longer than you’ve been breathing; this assumes that you were born after 1964. 😉

I am looking forward to reading about your journey Tatiana. You are off to a great start…Sorta like the settlers you made a beeline through MDW found your plot of land, and staked your claim. Well done…

    Tatiana,
One of the most relevant and universal passages in your blog was about the party to work ratio. It is really important to learn your physical strengths in addition to your mental and artistic strengths.

While not all partying is a substitute for the fear of being alone and hating your day-job — some of it is for socializing and just having some fun to balance the day job – learning a balance of what you can personally handle is a good thing.

Be reflective, and knowing that sometimes when you’re involved in the pursuit of a creative career or actualizing (producing material or events) the job doesn’t have a clear-cut start and end time… that’s deep… and important.

Figure you’ll need some relaxation time that isn’t as all out as partying… and then you got something.

Best of luck, energy and surrounding events with your pursuits!

@ Rachel Thanks for the insightful comment. Trust me as hard as I work, I still like to boogie. 🙂 However I have found a great many of my generation who consider partying more than they consider their careers. I’m not that girl!

To quote MOTU, “I’m not going to a party unless I’m giving it (and he gives the best!) or someone is writing me a check.” I’m not where he is yet, but I’m clearly more interested in my career than I am in getting into the latest hot club to catch a glimpse of Paris Hilton.

I do keep a significant amount of balance and have relaxation time. I’m constantly surveying my surroundings and the global climate to ensure I stay grounded, connected, and inspired creatively.

@ Marc “So, kudos, screw you I’m still jealous, and good luck!”

Don’t need luck, I have my own column on MDW- the hottest new place on the web. Anybody who is anybody has a column here. Have to go, I have a column to write.

PS- I’m just messing with you that was sarcasm. As a writer at MDW, I sometimes use that. Sarcasm that is- here at MDW, where I’m writing a column. But cheer up I hear Michael really likes you in a non-brokeback way. You read his column? You can find it here at MDW.

@ Q. “Wow, Tatiana.. you seem so calm in real life… this piece is so aggressive… I like it!!!”

I am calm in real life. As an example, I’ve often calmly crushed people who’ve underestimated me. Which happens a lot, being a girl who prefers a smile to a frown or to paraphrase former President Theodore Roosevelt – I speak softly and carry a glock.

    December 20, 2008 - 3:25 pm

MOTU said “WHAT THE FISH??? What is up with all these comments? How dare you garner a following so quick?”

It does seem I have a little bit of a following, I’m flattered to say the least. Thank you everyone who commented here and those sent to me personally!

As an aside, I’ve noticed a lot of people make mention that I seem so sweet and lovable and this column has a bit of an edge to it. I like to think of myself as sweet and lovable, but like everyone else there is more to me than meets the eye.

Also MOTU told me if I wrote anything that even appeared to be fluff, there would be a space for rent next Thursday instead of my column. I like it here- I built this site. How sad would it be for me to get kicked off?

Tatiana, I will make the claim that I was the FIRST person to recognize, officially, in writing, your magical nature on MDW! Ten days ago, December 12, I said, “Tatiana! That was SO cool! THAT was like a tiny Internet Holiday Miracle! Are you part Elf? Rock on!”

    http://michaeldavisworld.com/cgi/wp/?p=59#comments

Now, you did correct me, saying that you’d rather think of yourself as a Fairy Queen! OK, you said “fairy”, I added the “Queen” part. Tatiana = Titania! Hey, works for me!

Congratulations on your assumption/appointment/usurping of the Thursday column on MDW! Well done! I will look forward to staying In the Mix on Thursdays.
