You People by Michael Davis – Straight No Chaser #97

Michael Jackson was once the biggest star in the world, now at best he is the butt of silly jokes and at worst he will be remembered as a footnote in the music business he changed. He changed the music business, he changed music. His influence is STILL being felt and his legacy may be a knock knock joke.
His downfall is entirely his fault. Who knows what was going though his mind when he made the statement that’s it’s “ OK to share your bed with a child.”
Shit. That was stupid.
Trust me this is a painful thing for me to write. I’ve met Michael Jackson, I’ve almost been in business with him twice, and I’ve been to his family home. Worst of all I was the biggest straight fan in the history of Michael Jackson. Man did I love me some Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five.
Mike, I know you are a comic fan and I know you are still cool but dude, however your current state in the world is your doing and no one but yours.
That said you are still the baddest motherfucker who EVER hit the stage…period.
People have jumped on Mike like there is a video of him with a toddler. There is none. There is a video of a certain big time soul singer with an underage girl who just beat that rap but there was NO public outrage on that guy. If that singer were convicted would there have been a public out cry? Maybe, maybe not. I could care less.
If he was convicted it would have been his own fault. Not mine, not yours but his.
President Bush has one of the worst- if not THE worst approval rating in the history of the presidency. He really screwed up the country; man oh man did he screw up the country. He screwed up the country so bad that a black man won in a landslide!
How screwed up is that? Imagine you are married to the sexist woman alive and you are such a bad lover she leaves you for vibrator.
A black vibrator.
A BIG BLACK VIBRATOR.
You know WHY she’s picked a vibrator and not another guy? Because she wanted to make SURE the job got done. Her next move will be to call me…
We elected Obama because he can get the job done. After four years of Bush the American public wanted to make sure we GET the job done. Now people are jumping on Bush like he is the Anti-Christ. Yeah, I’ve done it also but you know what?
Bush has grown on me.
Wait!! Don’t go!
Come on admit it, he’s a likable guy. He really is. I realized this when I saw how cool he was when he ducked those shoes hurled at him last week while in Iraq. He made a joke out of it; he often makes jokes at his own expense.
That to me is, likable.
OK, OK he is the reason the whole WORLD hates us but that aside, he’s pretty likable. He’s also grown on me and the reason the USA is in the state it’s in is not all Bush’s fault.
Nope.
It’s YOURS.
I mean if you are a republican who voted him in TWICE, YOU are responsible for the state of the country. I’m not responsible at all. I never voted for him once.
Not me buddy. I take NO responsibility for W.
It was crystal CLEAR after a few months on the job what kind of man this guy would be. Look, I have a HORRIBLE short-term memory but I remember some of the things this guy said:
“Bring it On.”
“Mission Accomplished.”
“If you are not with us, you are against us.”
“I’m the decider.”
“Rarely is the questioned asked: Is our children learning?”
“I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family.”
“That Hillary has a GREAT big ass for a white girl!”
I am not making this stuff up. Well except for the ‘Hillary’ one, that’s all me.
Bush really said all of the above stuff. And he said most of it in his first term.
His first term.
Now talking like an idiot is not a crime. Neither is acting like one…unless you run the FREE WORLD. Then that may be a wee bit of a problem.
Look let’s be serious, George Bush is not an idiot…his son is!
Blam! RIM SHOT! I’m here all week, try the veal!
Sorry, let me try this again. George W. Bush is not an idiot. He really is not. He is simply a guy who thinks he is right and damn everybody else. All jokes aside I like that. That is in fact a lot like me. I could give a flying fish what everybody else thinks at times I go with what I want.
But, I’m not President Of The United States. I’m just Master Of The Universe.
W, you did the best you could and yeah you royally messed up a LOT of stuff dude but hey it’s not all your fault you had help. Help from a bunch of small-minded assholes (yeah I finally used the A word but it took me 870 words to get there so I’m trying) that voted you in twice.
Why say this now?
I’ll tell you why. I’m a simple guy (must A V O I D obvious Bush joke) if you tell me you are going to hunt down the terrorists who made 9/11 happen then do that. Don’t divert my attention by invading a county that had NOTHING to do with 9/11.
If you tell me you will provide great Internet service then do that. Do YOU hear me TIME WARNER?? I swear if I get up ONE more freakin morning and your service is down I’m switching to AT&T. I had the same damn problem with Time Warner Cable and that’s why Direct TV is in my house!! Oh, and while I’m at it, where in the hell is the TOY LINE FOR STATIC SHOCK??
Like I said I’m a simple guy; I don’t care if you are the President of The United States Of America or the President Of Time Warner, do what you say you will, or I will take action.
I would be a complete asshole (1053 words before I used it again) if I continue to use a service that was horrible, or vote for a man who was doing a horrible job. Bush was voted in twice. He clearly was messing up in his first term and YOU people voted him in again. Oh how I love saying that…YOU PEOPLE.
So again, why now? Well I’m starting to hear little rumblings from the ASSHOLES (1127) on the right. These idiots are starting to try and link Obama to the scandal in Illinois. “What did he know? When did he know it?” They are also starting to criticize his lack of actions on the financial crisis.
He’s not even President yet and he’s doing the job wrong according to some of these geniuses. Yeah the very same jokers are starting again with their stupidity. Remember how they went after Bill Clinton when the country was in the best shape in a century? I do.
Look, I could give a shit what the mailman does with his penis as long as my copy of Asian Chick Monthly is in my mailbox every month…in the plastic.
You people! HA! Sounds kind of crappie when it describes you eh, Mr. & Mrs. Right? YOU tried that ‘Real American’ shit and it did not work. You tried to scare us, AGAIN and it did not work and now you are slowly ever so slowly trying to screw with Obama even before he takes the job.
Good luck, I hate to tell you all this but… we are on to you.
Or at least I am.
So every so often I will use my one small voice to remind people that YOU PEOPLE help destroy our goodwill around the world to say the least. It won’t just be in this column, nope, it will be in every comic book I create, every novel I write, every TV show I produce every goddamn thing I do because this time YOU people will not get your way.
Yeah, I remember the contract with America and the Moral Majority. I also know that porn outsells every single other category in video history at least 10 to 1. So MOST Americans enjoy a bit of the nasty and there is nothing you can do about it.
So how’s that for morals?
Now YOU people remember this, it’s OUR time and you have two options, you can help or move to Utah.
Stop worrying about how other people live and just keep in mind that you don’t know everything.
In fact judging from the fact that you put Bush in office TWICE you don’t know shit.

There is a simple axiom in this country, and possibly across humanity – do not be happy with what you have. As soon as we build the generator that runs on Outrage, we should get started on the way to heat our swimming pools on the friction generated from people switching sides after the fact.
Back when Johnny Carson quit the Tonight Show, they gave the show to Jay Leno. As SOON as they did that, the brass at NBC were CONVINCED they’d made a mistake. They started trying to figure out ways to have their Letterman and eat him too. And now that Jay is leaving, it’s all happening again. NBC is cancelling its entire Network line-up at 10PM and handing it to Leno. The guy who said he was quitting.
Why are they doing this? Because they don’t want him to change his mind and go do a talkshow on another network. They’re willing to alienate Conan O’Brein in the EXACT same way they did Dave, by effectively keeping him on “the second show”. All they had to do was to look at the book The Late Shift (and the film from same, which I’m AMAZED HBO isn’t running at Beastmaster-level rotation) to see how crazy that’s going to make people.
Before Bush took the presidency, before he did (or failed to do) thing ONE, the Left started their assault. He stole the election, he’s a puppet for the Right, he’s this he’s that… Regardless of how he eventually ended up doing (and oh boy is THAT another discussion) they tried to effectively end his ability to govern before he even got into the office. They did it to Clinton before that. So for people to act shocked and suprised that it’s happening to Obama now is just naive. It’s not because he’s anything other then The Guy The Other Party Chose. The one about the Birth Certificate is a new one, but this is the same campaign the Democrats pulled four and eight years ago – do not give the incoming president a chance to succeed, or even to govern. Like the Scientologists say; never defend, always attack. Undermine people’s faith in the man, the office and the government in general. Yes, one could make the suggestion that the Republicans, remembering how annoying it was when it happened to them, could make a big showe of NOT doing that, thus taking the moral high ground and showing they have more character than the Democrats. Did it work when you were in school and the teacher suggested that you not try to “get back at” the guy who tripped you, or teased you, or stole your lunch money? If you weren’t willing to make such a tough moral decision when you were seven, what makes you think they’ll be able to make it decades later after endless amounts of education and personal experience? It’s business as usual. It will not change(TM).
As is, since nobody seems to have noticed, attempting to gain personal or political favors in exchange for a plum position. It has been SOP since the invention of the position. The first thing the guy who invented fire thought was “OW! HOT!” The second thing was “How can I make this work for me?” Yet the politicians and the media are going after the beleaguered Governor of Illinois as if he’d invented a new crime. Obama and his people are acting like they didn’t even know who the Governor WAS. Let me make a bold statement. YES, Obama had discussions with the Governor. YES, he has DEFINITE opinions about who his successor whould be, and YES, he expressed those opinions, directly or through intermediaries, to the Governor. Of COURSE he did. But the Republicans and the media have decided to treat this crime as something new and interesting. They’re using words like “Patronage” and “Political favors” out like new phrases in Turkish learned with the help of Rosetta Stone Software. So Obama, petrified to go near anything even REMOTELY controversial, has gone into over-denial. He could have made the very reasonable statement, “Yes, I did have talk with the Governor about who I think should take over my position; it’s a standard practice.” He could have said that (ie, the truth) and still make it clear that he wasn’t involved in his little eBay analogue. But since the rule in government is “Never give the opposing side A-NY-THING they could concievably use against you”, he’s saying “Illinois? What’s that?” It’s as ridiculous as when Clinton “Didn’t inhale”.
Politicians should just save time and answer every question “Splunge”.
My local talk radio station has a commercial running asking you to vote in thie latest poll, “How good a job is Obama doing as President so far?” And every time the commercial comes on, I scream at the radio “HE’S NOT THE DAMN PRESIDENT YET, YOU CLODS!” and bemoan the fact that my XM Radio isn’t working at the moment.

Hmmm… Two years ago, at a tribute to Lord Buckley, 92 year old Professor Irwin Corey (one of my genuine heroes) called President George W. Bush a fucking asshole. Then he thought it over a bit and acknowledged “no, we NEED assholes.”
He wasn’t referring to the type that walked.

That whole mishegas has colored (no offense) the entire electoral process, and I think it will for decades. It turned the Presidency into damaged goods. No matter who got the job, the opposing side wouldn’t even have to go past the asterisk floating above him for the next four years. Heck, it was W’s icon in Doonesbury for the first term. (I can’t wait to see what Obama’s will be. I’m betting a halo, or perhaps a corona.)
“Challenge the count” is now an official part of the playbook for both sides. Procedures that have been perfectly serviceable for centuries are suddenly being called into suspicion. If Obama had not won the popular vote, just winning as a result of the electoral college, you’d have seen both sides of the argument change sides so fast it’d leave you dizzy.
If you don’t get the result you want, sue. If that doesn’t work, protest. If that doesn’t work, just go ahead and do what you were doing anyway and to hell with the majority.
Notice I don’t specify which side I’m talking about. Because ALL sides follow that tactic now. And for one side to be “shocked, SHOCKED” when it gets used by the other is just plain trying to fool you. Let he who is without sin, and all that.

Vinnie,
I am still baffled, that some states LET the Governor decide, who replaces whom. I thought that it is supposed to be up to the people, to cast their VOTE, for the successor.
That would seriously elimate issues like Boggo-Gate, or whatever they’re calling it now. Voter fraud? Now, that’s a different animal.

On the first point, I would say that Michael Jackson may be associated forever with his oddities… BUT his music stands on it’s own. James Brown was nearly insane… Kurt Cobain was a drug addled nightmare….face it. Musicians, hell, many artists, are wholly separate entities to their work. Michael Jackson’s legacy to me will be his INSANE work in the studio. His amazing falsetto, melody lines, and his commitment to exploring the mediums he worked in. His personal life is a mess, but I’d like to think when it’s all said and done, Thriller, Bad, Black and White…. those will be his legacy.
Concerning Obama being linked to Blagoyvich, well duh. Wouldn’t the right jump on that like flys on a sugar stick? Hell yes. But Obama knows how to deflect, and Roddy B of Illinois is in the soup hardcore.
Good thoughts again Mr. Davis… as always, I’ll leave with a joke: On the first day of Hanukkah, my true love gave to me… a receipt for the outfit I apparently bought her.

@ Marc,
Dude-James Brown, Curt Corbain and all those others who have had their inner demons exposed will be judged on their music because that behavior plays into the ‘Rock Star’ image.
When you start mucking with kids or animals (regardless if it’s proven or not) in America at least, all bets are off.

Now THAT was a bit of adroit misdirection. Or perhaps better stated…some blim blam ‘rope a dope’ of writing! Nicely done, Mr. Michael.
One of the greatest points of frustration that I have with the ‘Moral Right’ … (notice that I didn’t say ‘Christian’, because in truth, there’s only a very small percentage of real Christians in America that are actually striving to live out the teachings and be obedient to the examples of the One whose birthday much of the world is about to celebrate)… is the level of sheer hypocrisy, laziness, and knot headed belief that morality can be legislated.
Trying to be that light that draws requires work (the majority of it being internal), it requires sacrifice, but mostly it requires commitment to the principal of love, and a motivation that’s driven not by a desire to bash people over the head with one’s interpretation of ‘right’, but a sincere desire to stand alongside with and encourage with grace.
But nah.. the so-called Moral Right has been bamboozled and punked by those who could give less than a damn about them or anybody else…and are hellbent on running roughshod over any and everybody who’re not in their tax bracket or hold the strings of power and manipulation.
And the only quibble I had with your expose’ was exactly what Martha brought forth…that being the fact that dear, soon to be put out to pasture, ol’ Dub ya was not elected by the people, but was greased in by TPTB…. …. twice.
So much for the moral part, huh?

This just in… Sassy Sarah’s still unmarried daughter (who you just know would be being called ALL KINDS of names if she were Black or Brown) Bristol should be giving birth any hour now… and her (by his own admission) redneck baby daddy Levi just got popped in a drug sting.
I’d say this means her 15 minutes are up, she’s been used and dropped. And any of her hopes of 2012 have gone up in smoke… (so to speak)
TPTB have now made certain that she fades away into the night. Those boys play rough.

Hi, Michael!
Love this new site!
I have a question about this whole “Legacy” business:
What is a “Legacy” and why is so important about having a “Legacy?”
(This especially applies to sports professionals!)
Perhaps it is because I don’t fully have an understanding of the concept.
I remember Jack Kirby for his art. I remember Rod Serling for his storytelling. I remember Isaac Hayes for his music and his film performances. These are the things that these people gave me that affected me and my life.
What someone did or did not do when they were not engaged in their occupation evidently has just as great (or greater) impact on their supposed legacy as the showcasing of their talents.
I just don’t get it.

I’ve got nine Michael Jackson or Jackson 5 songs on my playlist and I wish I had double or triple that. There’s no denying that the guy put the “pop” in pop music.
But why did he have to go “Howard Hughes” on everybody? Jackson is a perfect example of why fame and fortune doesn’t mean squat when it comes to true happiness.

Let’s face it, both the 2000 and the 2004 elections were stolen.
And most people’s lives are so troubled that they don’t have the time or energy to learn more about it. Half the households in this country make less than $46,000 a year. That’s barely enough to house, feed, and educate a family of four.
The Democrats were asleep for a while, and that allowed the Evil Landlord to evict the poor widow and her children from their meager home. But the Democrats are not the vile, evil, despicable scoundrels.

I think part of the MJ thing is that psychologically, we understand that he missed out on his own childhood. Physically… we don’t know what’s going on… except that MJ had the opportunity to cross the line with the sleepovers.
I haven’t read up on all of the testimony and articles to say more.
On the democracy-representative republic issue…. what happens is if you’re a tolerant to diversity person, you might just let some things go. The lesson to be learned which was learned finally was that certain American intolerant groups are organized and aren’t going to let things rest. Thus, the tolerant are forced to use some of the tools of the intolerant to keep intolerant initiatives in check.

Mind if I quote another former president?
From “The American President”:
“Lewis Rothschild: People want leadership, Mr. President, and in the absence of genuine leadership, they’ll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They’re so thirsty for it they’ll crawl through the desert toward a mirage, and when they discover there’s no water, they’ll drink the sand.
President Andrew Shepherd: Lewis, we’ve had presidents who were beloved, who couldn’t find a coherent sentence with two hands and a flashlight. People don’t drink the sand because they’re thirsty. They drink the sand because they don’t know the difference.”
For eight years, we’ve been told that the sand was water, and we were willing to suck it up, along with whatever sort of bullshit Bush and Rove added to it. Finally we woke up, spit it out, and elected someone who said that there’s a real oasis just over the hill, we just have to walk a bit farther. A man who held out hope, and didn’t yank it back when we reached for it.
A lot of people have been ranting on about how he’s the first afroam president, he’s this, he’s that… You know what?
I DO NOT GIVE A RAT’S PUTRID AND BLEEDING ASS WHAT COLOR HE IS.
He’s a good man. Deep down, Michael’s a good man. He genuinely cares about kids. He’s made a misstep or three, and it’s cost him dearly, but he’s still a good man. More than anything else, he needed to be true to himself, make the music he loves, and tell the world to go screw themselves. As Polonius said, to thine own self be true, for it then follows as night follows the day that thou canst be false to none.
I have a number of musician friends. They do their thing, whether it sells records or not. They do what they love. Their names are many and varied, and the music is the same as them. Don is lead guitar for Blue Oyster Cult. Webb plays country-flavored rock. Pete is a jazz fiddler. Bucky has been a rockabilly picker since he was a kid in the Fifties. Preston plays the blues. Griffin plays emo rock. None of them are hugely successful, but they play what they love, and have never let fame give them the bighead. Because fame is what will ultimately bite you in the ass. Sooner or later, hubris comes sneaking up on you, and you forget that you’re only mortal, and it’s just rock and roll.
And all glory is fleeting.

On the subject of music icons and their images…
I HIGHLY recommend the Taylor Hackford documentary on Chuck Berry called “CHUCK BERRY: HAIL! HAIL! ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!”
I especially recommend the 4-disc version with the added footage and interviews.
They discuss how Chuck would hold the movie production for ransom by refusing to be filmed unless he was given a bag of money…EVERY SINGLE DAY!
See also…the story of how they took a trip to the first prison Chuck went to (his first of 3 prison sentences) which almost led to the prisoners’ gang rape of the female members of the crew.
The film (in it’s entirety) showed me all sorts of facets to Chuck Berry that I hadn’t even dreamed of, from his callous greed to his talent and love of poetry.
I also like the interview section which features interviews with Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley, Roy Orbison, both Everly Brothers, and many others.
They also interviewed Sun Records legend Sam Phillips (for those who have the sewer boots, if you know what I mean) and Jerry Lee Lewis (for those that can stand it).
Just a thought.

“Let’s face it, both the 2000 and the 2004 elections were stolen.”
Sigh.
OK, here goes.
NO THEY WEREN’T.
There, I hope that settles everything.
Here’s the part of the 2000 election that nobody seems to care about. If the country had actually cared enough about either candidate, it would have been able to get enough votes to show a clear victory. Instead, it was so close they had to go divong after the preosidency the way everyone in fourth grade tries to claim the science test with a “B” but no name on it. This country COULDN’T MAKE ITS MIND on who to elect. we went as close to 50/50 as makes no odds. It was so close that it didn’t come down to one state, it came down to one COUNTY in one state.
It’s not because both men made viable and reasoned arguments as to how they could better govern, (oh BOY was it not about that), it’s becuase people basically flipped a coin mentally, and we LITERALLY came up even. Gore beat Bush in the popular vote(*) by ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT. That is nothing to crow about.
in the 2004 election, Bush beat Kerry by three million votes. You can rail about how stupid that makes people, you can bemoan to gullibility of the voter, but you can’t (credibly) say it was 2000 all over again.
This goes back to what I was saying before. The mess that was the 2000 election has de facto made all elections suspect moving forward. You don’t even have to have evidence anymore. You just have to raise an eyebrow and say “Well, WE all know what happened there, don’t we?” and the position again becomes damaged goods. And that’s dangerous.
This time we got a clear winner. Agree with him or not, He got people interested, even excited. When you combine the people who voted for him, and the ones who would have voted for a can of foot powder over a Rebublican, he got a ten million vote majority. All the claims of voter fraud melted away, all the claims that the electoral college was an unfair system all vanished. That’s what a clear and wide majority does – it renders the need for negotiation and summary judgements moot.
(*) Yes you heard me, I happily admit that Gore got the popular vote. But because of the electoral process (which has been working without a single credible complaint for two centuries) he still lost the election. If you have a problem with the electoral college, you can’t say “that’s not fair” after the race is run, you tender youe complaints and try to get it changed for next time. Or, you just tuck it in your pocket and use it as something to whine about in the future. Both strategies are apparently accepted now.

Hi Vinnie….not to get into a tit for tat… but I think that there are numerous indicators that both the 2000 and 2004 elections were STRONGLY impacted by the masters of dirty tricks party. If any or all of these robbed 10’s of thousands of legitimate voters from either exercising or outright robbing citizens of their right to vote, ergo…stealing. And also, which certainly impacts who ushers in and greases the tracks for the electors .
