The Fighting Five Revealed, by Michael Davis – Straight No Chaser #104

Jeremiah Avery asked last week what inspired me to create the Fighting Five. Jeremiah I’m ready to tell you now, and everyone else who cares to listen.I created the Fighting Five because:
I was filled with wonder at what was before me.
I was excited about comics so much I could think of little else.
I was happy all the time despite being poor and sometimes hungry.
I was more than willing to stay up all night drawing. In fact I looked forward to it.
I was never shy about showing my work. Everybody loved it!
I was ten.
The Bulldozer, The Anything Man (created because I could not think of anything else to name him. Get it?) The Liberator (spelled sometimes Liverator) The Whizzer and Judo Master (both stolen, one from Tower comics the other from Carlton comics) came from my ten-year-old imagination.
That imagination that was being fueled daily by Adams, Lee, Kirby, Ditko, both Buscema’s, Wrightson, Wein, Wolfman, O’Neil and more of comics’ silver and in most cases SECOND silver age of comics. ALL were giants to me and there were many, many more.
Except for Steve Ditko (who I saw at Marvel comics once picking up a check but was to chicken shit to say anything to) I have met every single one of those men whom were my heroes growing up. Most are now friends and in fact Marv Wolfmen, Len Wien and Bernie Wrightson I love like family.
I hate to say this, because there’s a chance they may read this but anytime I’m at Len’s or Marv’s home I pinch myself and try and steal something. As far as Bernie Wrightson goes, I met him 20 or so years ago at DC comics. Like the pain in the ass dick I can be I would not let him get a word in edgewise while I gushed over him like a little bitch.
I was told later that day by someone that I was being annoying to Bernie and I felt like shit. That is until I was about to leave and Bernie handed me a small drawing of Bat-Man along with his phone number.
THAT was a good day.
Oh, to that person who told me I was annoying and who still works at DC…KISS MY ANNOYING ASS!
MAN OH MAN, comics meant everything to me. No matter what was going on in my life good or bad comics were a mainstay.
Comics, comics, comics!
I was not kidding when I said The Fighting Five would change everything.
It did. Well for me anyway.
I came across my Fighting Five pages while my studio assistant James was organizing my flat files. We were in the middle of preparing the studio for a new project when I took a look at the pages I had not looked at for at least 25 years. Every single thing I LOVED about comics and why I was involved in the first place came rushing up in me when I started reading the story again.
When it comes to comics. I guess I’ve become jaded although I fear that still may not be the word for what I’ve become. MDW has been up for months and except for an occasional sly remark I’ve written nothing about comics and my love for them or the industry.
MDW started because of comics. Hell, most everyone who writes on this site writes here because comics were why we met. I met Mike Gold and Martha at DC. Mike Raub and Tatiana at a comics convention, Kevin was a student of mine in a master class on comics I taught. I talked to Stacy about writing comics as a black woman.
Yeah, as I said in my piece on Fighting Five last week that nothing was bigger than what was premieres here today. I said that was not hype that was the real deal.
I was telling the truth. To me nothing is bigger than this, and I really feel that if I was able to give you a tiny, tiny, tiny glimpse of the wonder I felt when I was creating this then truth is nothing IS bigger than that.
All that aside, take a GOOD look at those pages. No panels, every page a full page spread which tells the story clearly and with direction.
Did I not tell you that this would be unlike anything you have ever seen? Look at the art, I was TEN YEARS OLD and I created a character called The Liberator (spelled sometimes Liverator) The Liberator was my black character. MY BLACK CHARACTER. I was a black kid living in the freakin projects and I had ONE black character.
How cool was that? I mean think of it, my flagship character was black and he was the coolest mofo in the strip. How easy would it have been for me to create NOTHING BUT black characters?
AND I WAS TEN!!!!
I remember like it was yesterday that I only wanted one black character so he could stand out and be the coolest…and I WAS TEN!!!
TEN, TEN, TEN, TEN!!!!
I hope that you all got the joke, if not just think of it as a Vertigo book.
More importantly than getting the joke I hope that even for the briefest of moments you saw the wonder that was to me, The Fighting Five.

Awesome! It’s akin to the time spent at the kitchen table with a sketchpad and some pens and pencils… the joy of creating your own worlds, limited only by your imagination. No video game can replace the imagination and creativity when we’re young. And then, when we discover comics… it’s like pandora’s box (but the “Evil” released is only the life long obsession).
I know you said this was a joke, and “I get it”… but the creator in me says Unshaven Comics could take these concepts and these pages, and make something awesome. With your guidance MOTU… it could happen. 🙂 Of course we’d have to make some new names for Judo Master and the Whizzer… I mean seriously… Judo? C’mon, Kung Fu is much more awesome. And the whizzer just sounds dirty.
All in all MOTU, thanks for making me recall the excitment of my own youth *which truly never ended* … and thanks for sharing a little bit of your young MOTU prowess.

Who can resist pushing a button marked “TOTAL POWER?”
I’ve been hearing about The Fighting Five for a LOT longer than it was teased on this site, and it was worth the wait.
All the world’s best ideas were first drawn out on public school manila paper.

Judo Master was originally created by Joe Gill and Frank McLaughlin! Frank McLaughlin just did the Kung Fu comic, “White Viper,” over at ComicMix with his daughter Erin and some other guy, “Dick Giordano.” Oh yeah, Mike Gold was a player on that project too. You might have heard of him. Frank and Erin are currently at the NYCC promoting “White Viper 2.” I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to read it on ComicMix some time later this year.
It’s funny how things can come full circle.
I’ve created teams of super-heroes. I remember one, “The Wardens of Quigly Hill.” They were all mental patients with super powers. Each one had a different super power and a different mental illness. Their base of operations was the abandoned “North Ward” (Ward- N) of the Quigly Memorial Mental Hospital. The Invulnerable Girl was suicidal. There was a Super-Spy-Gadget-Guy, “Trick-Trap,” who was paranoid. “Just because you’re paranoid, that doesn’t mean people aren’t out to get you!” There was a Weasel-Boy Trick Shooter; he was a kleptomaniac. I think I was influenced by “Doom Patrol” and Trevor Von Eeden’s “Thriller.” It was group of heroes who banded together, not because of their shared powers, but because of their understanding of each other’s disabilities, a super support group.
When I was twelve, I created another character, “Chief of Staff.” He would fly about with a Rocket Powered Bo. He was also the CEO of a huge multinational corporation. Even at twelve, I liked puns.
I love “The Fighting Five!” It was worth the build up. Consider creating a limited edition lithograph of “The Fighting Five.” Proceeds from the sale could go to some worthy charity. Say, “The Hero Initiative”? Just a thought.

I’m sorry Captain MOTU. My intent wasn’t to say your illustrations were not AWESOME. They totally were. However, I think an actual update to the concepts and designs is actually possible. Would it be AS awesome as your originals? Never. But it might get close.

I’m digging that Russ. The problem there is that I don’t own The Whizzer or Judo Master. I do a lot of non-profit work and what you suggest is a good idea. There is still 9 pages left to the F.F. in book 1 and another 12 in book 2 I introduce other characters that I created (The Cosmic Blazer!) so maybe a re-do of the series that is JUST for a worth while charity may be the ticket.

Marc,
I have often thought of updating the series and in fact I have FF pages over the next 10 years that showed my progress as a writer and artist.
I worked on the FF at The High School Of Art And Design in New York (the greatest high school ever) and even when I was a undergrad at Pratt Institute-the greatest art school in the world.
So an update would not be that far fetched-maybe just on MDW

Great stuff, M.O.T.U.! It takes me back to when my mother bought me a drawing pad and I’d spend lots of time in my room drawing and creating my own worlds – really pushing my imagination. I couldn’t (and still don’t) draw worth a damn, but I didn’t really care, it was the stories that I conjured that made it all worthwhile.
Thanks for sharing and bringing us all back to that time.

Is it wrong to be jealous of the ability of a 10 year old M.O.T.U.? Because I am. Thank you for sharing this piece of history with us. Seriously, it is very cool.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the “March”. Is it alright if we put stickers on the front of them that say “Michael Davis Approved’ ON THE FRONT. Our figures estimate this will increase sales by 2,000%

Man, MD. I can truly appreciate the level you were at when you were ten. You were ahead of your time. When I was ten and I would show my cousins my drawings, they would just look at them and laugh uncontrollably for half an hour. I don’t think that helped me much, and sometimes I still wake up hearing their laughter.
I guess God has given you a gift – the gift to illustrate the images in your mind. He gave me a gift too, but it’s more a gift to the ladies.

I guess giving the ladies cash so they can ‘date’ you can be considered a gift.

Is ULTAN the name of one of the Fighting Five? I hope the next installment answers this and many other burning questions . . .
Also:
“I’m busy. Why don’t you go start a riot or something?” No comic-face fool talks to THE LIBERATOR like that, and gets away with it!
