Hitting the Mark, by Tatiana – In The Mix #13

The last year and a half, I have been coordinating the Illustration West 47 competition for the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles. It is noted as the largest juried illustration competition west of New York worldwide. We received entries from all stretches of the world from the continental U.S. to the UK and Singapore, representing some of the best working illustrators and emerging talents. Just ask MDW’s own Mike Gold or Michael Davis. They were gracious enough to join my esteemed panel of judges along with Denys Cowan, writer Marv Wolfman, Bob Kato, Simone Legno (Tokidoki), Isabelle Dervaux, Joe Cepeda, Penelope Dullaghan, Tomasz Opasinski, Edel Rodriquez, Heidi Volpe, and Nate Williams.

This article won’t be an all out plug, but the opening reception is next week March 28th 7pm at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra, CA!

Combining my web development skills with the Illustration West 47 planning, I took the submission process into the technology age. The ease of the process increased our entries, landing us with over a whopping 1500+ entries. The judges had a hard task ahead of them, they combed through the entries and scaled the show to the best of best and accepted about 300 entries!

Under my direction, we embraced the Comic Book and Graphic Novel industry and added a new category. At 8pm, the awards ceremony we be conducted. With awards designed by myself from the same awards creators to the Grammy’s. MDW’s very own artist, Kevin McCarthy has been selected to receive the Gold Award in the newly added Comic Book and Graphic Novel category! While he won’t be in attendance, I’m very proud of his achievement and happy to have his art grace the site every Wednesday right here, check out Gee, Whizzard! if you haven’t been following it.
