Lies, by Mike Gold – Brainiac On Banjo #128

Now that Judge Sonia Sotomayor has made it to the Supreme Court, why did the Re-Pubs put her through all that bullshit? Well, now that it’s out of committee, the truth can be told!

The Re-Pubs didn’t pounce all over Sotomayor because she’s a woman. They didn’t pounce all over her because she’s Latina. They weren’t looking to see if she would melt under their withering attacks. I mean, that might have been in their heart of hearts, but that’s not the reason. All that crap had not a thing to do with Sonia Sotomayor.

The Re-Pubs did all that for the 2012 election. All the lies, all the broad distortions of her statements, all the misrepresentation of her record and her “support” of terrorist Puerto Ricans were put before the Senate simply to provide ground coverage so the Re-Pubs could restate them during the 2012 presidential campaign as statements of fact.

No kidding. These people really are that scummy.

In 2012, the Re-Pubs are going to point to the statements made at the Senate confirmation hearings and say “Obama appointed a racist. Obama appointed another terrorist-lover, just like himself. Obama appointed a judicial activist. Who will he appoint next, Bill Ayers? Obama appointed still another Socialist! Well, we can’t get rid of a Supreme Court justice, but we can get rid of Barack Obama. Vote Re-Pub or your children will be murdered in their sleep!”

Mark my words. This is what you are going to hear in 2012. You’ll hear a lot about “reverse racism” – a phrase that has no right to exist. Racism is racism. The Republicans are great at laying down a thick foundation for their lies, and no matter how much Republican Party Chairfool Rush Limbaugh bobs and weaves and jumps and snorts, they’re going to play those lies for all they’re worth.

They won’t start until after they’re done ruining any effective, useful health care plan. The lies being heaped out over that one make the Sotomayor attacks look like a pleasant day at the park.

That’s a shame, because I know their behavior in the next elections will make me sick.

Part of the problem in Washington is there’s little to no time spent actually running the country or otherwise getting anything done, save getting re-elected. Every move is to add to the evidence for your re-election (or more often, simply against your opponents’) They all new Sotomayor would get in, which if anything, made it safer to lambaste her. Threy didn’t have to succeed in keeping her off the bonch, just make sure people know they tried. So when the first iffy decision comes along that they don’t agree with, they can talk about what Obama did (even though they voted for her, but that doesn’t count)

Common sense tells me that a list of things one candidate did right is more convincing than a list of what the other guy did wrong. But as Nick Naylor said, I don’t have to prove I’m right, I just have to prove you’re wrong. If you’re wrong, I MUST be right.

    Nick Naylor is my hero.

We can’t throw em all out, sadly Alan. Pollytishans are made of rubber. Who else can openly rape their own country, and draw a salary with a smile plastered to their faces? There was a time, long before I was born, when there was some… humanity to our government. But in this day and age… we are all bought and sold ad-hoc by the people who write our laws. Corporations drive the government, and everyone is in everyone elses pocket. It’s all photo-ops, and human interest stories until the elections, and then it’s all lies, and layered lies, and sound bytes.

We live in an era where we could be the most intelligent, most informed, most proactive generation the world has ever seen. We could be solving the world’s need for cleaner energy. We could be perfecting sustainable food sourcing to end world hunger. We could even cure horrible diseases and save our fellow men, women, and children dying in 3rd world countries… but ONLY if we get involved. Otherwise… we can all continue to sit on our hands and listen to Jon Stewart make jokes, whilst we flush our future right down the crapper.

I agree Alan. We can evolve or devolve.
“…and everyone is in everyone elses pocket.”
Stimulated and stunned, I checked. There wasn’t anyone in any of my pockets. Nuts!

Maybe we ought to do for politicos like we used to do for soldiers: draft the candidates, then choose from that list on election day.

I’m for a lottery. Everybody’s in it, and if you win you’ve got to serve. Can’t do any worse, it’ll kill the lobbiests, destroy two-party control, and bring the concerns of the common folk to the forefront.
