The Nerd Flu Commeth. By Felix Serrano – Robot Dialog #4

So after over a year of waiting, New York City will see another huge Comic Convention, This time around the NYCC is more of a media event rather than focusing on comics. Merging with the New York Anime Festival NYCC has been repackaged as “The largest Pop Culture event on the East Coast.”
Hooray!
This makes me happy. It’s like SDCC in my back yard. Not only that, I can now indulge in all the giant robot goodness that will ensue; however… this means that they are going to cram in double the nerd bodies into a single structure. As we all know many fan boys (and girls) aren’t the most hygienically sound of people. So a few simple rules when entering the belly of beast of nerdom for my fellow colleagues and the spectators who like watching train wreck after train wreck.
Rule #1 – Shake no hands! It’s flu season people, not only that, your typical McDonald’s chomping cosplaying manga loving individuals tend to not read the “please wash hands signs”
Rule #2 – Purell is your lifeline in this zone. Think about it, one person sneezes and thumbs through a comic bin or picks up an action figure, you then (not knowing who has been thumbing the warez) touch an infected object…BAM! 3 days later your tired and feeling shitty…nerd flu got you! So please, disinfect as much as possible.
Rule #3 – Step away from the traffic when you can. I’ve found myself wandering aimlessly for hours looking at everything. Who knows how many people crop-dusted my path. Step outside. It will minimize your chances of catching an airborne zombie virus.
Lastly, I have a confession to make. I think I’m a closeted DC fan. I was lukewarm about the con then I learned that there will be DC Universe online demos going on in addition to beta key hand outs for the game to anyone who attends the Q&A DCU Online party hosted by Jim Lee. Not only that, I watched Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and it was great. Character design, story, action and animation were all top notch. Not to mention plenty of Jack Kirby in there. Then I watched the Iron man 2 blu ray, and it was exactly that. Iron man 2. Filler. Nothing was really wrong with the movie, but watching it again didn’t do much for me either. I guess Frank Miller was right, I don’t want to see Superman sweat, but I do want to see Darkseid give Batman props and beat the living shit out of superman, over and over again.
Catch y’all at the NYCC.
And if you happen to pass by the Devils Due Publishing booth, tell Josh Blaylock I said hello.

Felix, I love the column, but you should refer to the “nerd flu” by it’s official name, H1NCC1701.
