AH! Child of the Golden Age of Illustration. By Felix Serrano – Robot Dialog #14

When it rains, it pours. The Holidays are supposed to be a time of glee and relaxation. A time for giving. That all goes out the window in my humble abode. No sleep, toddlers with 103 fevers, blizzards, computer hacking and the ominous deadline all pepper my landscape. Through all of this holiday despair there is always light. As I write this, my dear friend who I have known for 20 years through music alone (Trent Reznor) blares through my speakers helping me make sense of all this chaos. And so sitting on my desk is my inspiration for this installment of RD. Adam Hughes: Child of the Golden Age of Illustration.

So when Santa stopped by on Saturday, he was kind enough to reward me with a very special book that had been sitting on my Amazon wish list for a few months. Cover Run – The DC Comics art of Adam Hughes. Adam’s painted and color work has been a huge influence and inspiration to my own work and this book was long overdue. Commentary and sketches accompany each illustration in Cover Run. But moving past that, it’s a tribute to Hughes work at DC and the unsung hero of this collaboration, the art direction of the amazing Mark Chiarello.

If you love classic illustration, Pin up girls, Wonder Woman, comics, cheese cake, boobs, vinyl or art, you need to own this book. It’s one for the Illustration lovers bookshelf.

Finally, for your viewing pleasure, since we’re on the topic of Modern Masters. I give you Moebius using a Cintiq tablet to school everyone on how it’s not the tools you use that make you a great artist.

That Moebius video was interesting to watch, but what’s up with the O Brother, Where Art Thou?/Atari 2600 Superman mash-up soundtrack? That shit was scary.

    To Motu:

Yeah, didn’t he write most of the books he illustrated? Or at least adapt old legends into book form for the books he illustrated?

    Gray,

I’m ashamed to say I’m JUST finding this out but I think it’s the latter of what you said.

    Kev,

I knew Phil Hartman was an illustrator and designer because I knew Phil. It never occured to me that everyone doesn’t know that. Good looking out.
