The Importance of Being Intolerant… By Whitney Farmer – Un Pop Culture

Whitney runs a rock music venue on the beach in L.A.. She has an M.B.A, and lives in exile in Orange County.
An apology was released on Monday from Orange County Republican Central Committee’s elected member Marilyn Davenport, a Fullerton-based 74-year-old self-described ‘imperfect Christian’, and by others, a ‘lady’. The apology was regarding an email that she sent last week to a circle of friends and select acquaintances that depicted a Photoshop-ped image of President Obama as a young chimpanzee held in the arms of a chimpanzee mother and father in a family portrait.
Appropriately, there is controversy that has erupted because of this act which undeniably is racism cloaked in political activism. Davenport’s apology twists not into shame but into renewed justification of her actions, and the request for her resignation by members within her party have been met with her staunch re-affirmation of her intentions to remain in her elected position, demonstrating an unwholesome lust for power at the expense of the community. Solutions to this impasse continue to be discussed, but a clear path has yet to be presented which could accomplish an optimal outcome.
Prosecution.
Intolerance of this action is demanded to establish that this community and this country reject racism. Pending interpretation of federal statutes and those of individual states wherein the email was sent, Davenport’s actions can be identified as hate crime. In a case such as this could be, the perpetrator is alleged to issue abusive communication motivated by bias (perceived inclusion within a group based on race, religion, etc.). Hate crimes may involve physical assault, property damage, harassment, and offensive communications such as verbal abuse, graffiti, letters, or email. A hate crime is a criminal federal offense, particularly if it crosses a state border. And in 31 of the states, civil penalties can also be assigned which can include monetary damages. In 2009, US Attorney General Eric Holder called for tougher laws and enforcement against hate crimes that masquerade as political activism. Can it begin with this incident?
In reviewing Davenport’s apology, it is telling to note that there is no indication of Christ-centered morality. None. She calls herself ‘imperfect’ rather than her actions sinful, wicked, or evil. Rather than humbling herself, she exalts herself. Instead of asking for forgiveness from the man who must be described according to Biblical interpretation as her earthly ruler, she apologizes instead to her colleagues (not to President Obama) for her naiveté over what she thought was a joke. Rather than praying for her leader, it is clear that she curses him. There is arrogance where there should be love, and self-righteousness worthy of Cain. There is no grief, no cry to create a contrite spirit and no plea for a clean heart to be transplanted where one of stone now resides.
Contrary to rumor, dropping the name of Jesus doesn’t mean you are with the Band. And it doesn’t mean you will get into the Green Room.
Quote of the Blog, from Jude 17-21: But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, that they were saying to you. “In the last time there shall be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.” These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit. But you, beloved…keep yourselves in the love of God…”

I had the joy of watching this “person’s” televised apology on live TV, Wednesday. She’s so pitiful, I can’t even muster anything stronger than scorn or ridicule against her. The head of the OC Republican Party is pressuring her to resign, while publicly scheming to have her removed if she won’t. (It appears that she won’t) She’s the worst kind of racist: the kind that doesn’t think that they’re racist. She’s not malevolent, she’s stupid. Too stupid to get excited about. When we find people like her, we must (metaphorically) crush them like a cockroach and move on.

Maybe we should run a picture of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as apes. That should help her know what it means.

Whitney said…”Contrary to rumor, dropping the name of Jesus doesn’t mean you are with the Band. And it doesn’t mean you will get into the Green Room.”
Perfect.
As to the dear, genteel Ms. Davenport’s ‘apology’…”I feel that it was inappropriate and I offended people,” Davenport said outside her suburban ranch-style home. “I think it’s only racist when the intent in my heart is to make it that way, and that was not the intent in my heart.”
Of course she neglected to mention the other foray’s she’s made into these stagnant waters…so yeaaah, I’m frankly deeply apprehensive to get a peek at what else is nestled in that thing she calls her heart.
Whereas, one has to give a degree of respect to Scott Baugh’s keeping the pressure on Davenport to resign, I completely co-sign with the following comments from a HuffPost blogger..(greenchilistew)
“If Davenport refuses to resign and the OC GOP cannot force her out, then the CA GOP needs to decertify the Orange County Republican Party as an officially recognized GOP organization. If they do not, no censure or reprimand will be able to remove the stench of racism which clings to the OC GOP. This is not Davenport’s first foray into public racism and it is not the OC GOP’s first either. This is but the latest example of an organization that has firmly entrenched, institutionalized racism at its core.
If the GOP doesn’t get rid of Davenport they might as well start wearing sheets.”

Doug Abramson –
I wish I shared your optimism about the power to overcome infestations. Maybe I’ve lived in dicier areas than you, but roaches breed rapidly, they carry disease everywhere, they are very tough to get rid of, and the longer they hang around the smarter they get.
I actually had a stare-down with one that was as big as a cell phone. When it realized I wasn’t backing down, it started to run. I threw my platform sandel about 15 feet and stunned it by knocking its outer shell right off. Then I smashed it, and enjoyed it while I was doing it.
Fighting racism, injustice, poverty or any of these diseases that take lives should give us the same holy pleasure.
We have to be careful to be vigilant, however, because it is a mistake to assume that ignorance is as contagous as wisdom, or that adversaries can only cause damage if they are enlightened criminal masterminds.

Something tells me she refers to herself as “imperfect” because she got caught. And because she missed the opportunity to put the middle chimp in a niqab.

Orange County is remarkably filthy under the manicured lawns. The watermelon patch at the White House pic that went through cyberspace awhile back came from here as well.
In a meeting I had here once with someone who works in education, I commented that – while her disrict’s scores on assesments were excellent – there were less than 10 black students who showed up in the data. I was told that there is unofficial discouragement against minorities to participate in the elective testing which could affect the aggregate scores. To her credit, she had shame and pain in her voice.
I keep thinking about Babylon: When Jerusalem fell and its exiles were brought there, Babylon was the richest and most sophisticated land that existed. What’s the difference to the OC…?

Amazing Martha –
As Jesus said, “When you say to me: ‘Lord, when did I do these terrible things to you…’, I will say that when you did it to the least of these you have done it to Me.”
I couldn’t bring myself to publish the pic with the President’s face in it. It hurt my heart too much, hence my fancy use of the ‘erase’ feature on MSPaint. So I couldn’t look on it being done to anyone. But Jesus’ would be completely on board with the spirit behind your idea.

Whitney,
Again the national (loudest?) voice of the Christian is the voice of people like Mrs. Davenport and her ilk. I’m sure there are some hand-painted “God hates fags” signs in her garage behind the cement jockey yard art statue.
It’s only in reading your blog and the blog another friend is writing about his struggles with his faith as his wife suffers through cancer, that I get a sense of a loving, humble, and continuously examined faith I’m learning is a truer vision of what it means to follow Christ. Maybe someday I’ll join in. Thanks.

Whitney,
The difference between Babylon and OC is that OC has better surfing. I grew up in OC, so I have a soft spot for the geography and attractions; but not its Republican politicians. I constantly had to deal with people like her growing up. The one’s my age, picking up on my Mick genes, but not my Jew name, assumed that I was a kindred spirit. ONCE. They learned that their Jr KKK “humor” was not going to be tolerated. Usually after I used several colorful metaphors. (Hey MOTU, what movie is that from?) The area has actually gotten better in the last thirty years. The growth in the Latino and Asian populations has forced many of the white idiots to shut up or move to Idaho. As for political cockroaches, I didn’t mean to imply that infestations were easy to get rid of. I meant that individual cockroaches could be smashed and wiped away. For infestations, we need to find some sort of political DDT.

Doug –
I’ve struggled with myself and the discomfort I have with the OC. I mean — come on — this place is bea-u-ti-ful. It is the official home of Surf City, USA, which Huntington Beach secured in the courts a few years ago. Any whining I have is insupportable and ridiculous, except when it comes to racism.
A synagogue was built recently in town and has yet to encounter problems. So far so good.
The political DDT of which you speak? VOTING! Might as well start the battlecry now.

Moriarty –
Emphasis on the continually examined faith, in my case. Sometimes I get so captured in anger over circumstances like this that I have to ponder “WWJD?” as an active choice of will until my blood cools down.
But Jesus said that it isn’t anger that’s the problem or sin. It’s the choices we make within that anger that can be evil. But they don’t have to be. That’s extremely comforting to me.
I’ve said it before, but I need to say it to myself as well, and often: Christians don’t kill for their faith, but are killed for it.
