Five Predictions of 2012 Hysteria, by Mike Gold — Brainiac On Banjo #255

December 26, 2011 Mike Gold 4 Comments

This is the time of year when they don’t take ratings, so teevee and radio fills the ozone with sundry “year’s best” and “year’s worst” lists. Seeing as how I pontificate on both throughout the year, I’m going to join in on the more tricky tradition of predicting things for 2012. As always, your comments and foresights are welcome.

Prediction 1: The Economy Is Not Going To Be The Big Issue of 2012…

… despite the media’s insistence that it should be and therefore is. Do not be fooled. The world’s longest-running reality show, The Middle East, will tap hardest into our inner Leo Bloom.

The Arab Spring is turning into Edgar Winter: things are for shit in Egypt, the military is now in charge and if they give in the Muslim Fundamentalists take over. Not good for the nation that is Israel’s greatest friend. Syria is smoldering, Iran may decide to go ahead with its nukes, Iraq is already falling apart, we’re still in Afghanistan, Pakistan is as reliable an ally as Vidkun Quisling, and the Israelis and the Palestinians can’t get along… for about two millennia.

Prediction 2: The Winner of the Iowa Primary is…

… possibly going to come in second, but he’ll be seen as the winner anyway, forcing both the media and the Republican Party to take Ron Paul seriously at last. For maybe three weeks.

The story will be about Paul because the Republican National Committee is scared shitless of the crazy li’l fuck and because the media could never take him seriously. Oh, and because his son is an idiot. Well so is Ron, but he talks about stuff people can relate to. Not Republicans and not Democrats, but people. Unfortunately, then Ron babbles some Libertarian Fundamentalist dogma and he gets blown off again.

Prediction 3: The Winner of the Republication Nomination Will Be…

… Mitt Romney. Yeah, that’s a no-brainer, but my reasoning might surprise you. Obama’s victory on the two-month middle class tax break extension wasn’t a victory for Obama anywhere near as much as it was a defeat for the Tea Party. The GOP finally realized the Tea Party’s stridency makes them unelectable. As the Baggers have only token presence in the Senate, it started there. The House had no choice but to go along, hoping voters won’t remember anything of all this by November. However, they will be reminded – in two months. Go figure.

Sadly for the Republican late-bloomers, it will be too late… because…

Prediction 4: The Next President of the United States will be…

… the same guy who’s on the job right now. Mitt Romney is damaged goods, he’s got all the charisma of John Kerry with none of the wit, he flip-flops like Doctor Mudd in the breeze, and goddamnit, some people can’t get past the magic underwear. Obama, on the other hand, has a lousy economy, hasn’t been able to get anything through the Republican House, is way too conciliatory, was born on Mongo and is black.

But the independents – whose ranks have grown 14% thus far – are tired of all the bullshit. They’re tired of the birthers, they’re tired of the Socialism hysteria, they’re very very tired of Congressional roadblock and while they might not like some of Obama’s ideas (me, too), they hate the Republican “just say no to everything” approach to government even more. He’s been less conciliatory – note the tax break extension and, while it still sucks, the economy is getting noticeably better. As we said back in 1972, why change dicks in the middle of a screw?

And hell, we survived with a half-black Commander-In-Chief and his full-black attractive First Lady; that ain’t a bugaboo to quite as many voters as it was in 2008.

Prediction 5: One Insane Law Will Change…

… but this one only affects us in Connecticut. I’ll share. In this state, if Christmas and New Year’s fall on a Sunday, the one day of the week when all liquor sales are illegal, then stores can’t sell beer and alcohol the following Monday either. Look, I don’t drink alcohol and even I think that one is beyond ridiculous. I’d like to blame it on Joe Lieberman but it’s too stupid even for him. It will be changed.

Tune in 52 weeks from now and we’ll see how it all turned out. Assuming they haven’t unplugged the Internet by then.

The economy will remain the main issue. Half the electorate can’t find the mideast on a map, let alone individual countries, and unless the towel heads are setting off bombs at the local mall, it just doesn’t seem that important. We’re pretty sure we don’t want them whackos in Iran to have nukes, but maybe we can get them enterprising Jews in Israel to take care of that problem for us. And if we could just get rid of them darn government regulations, we could drill all the oil we need right here at home, and then them Arabs can all blow each other up!

And I’ll add that all but one of the Republican contenders have zero foreign policy experience, and none of them have much to say on foreign policy other than “Israel good, Iran bad.”

“And hell, we survived with a half-black Commander-In-Chief and his full-black attractive First Lady; that ain’t a bugaboo to quite as many voters as it was in 2008.”

I don’t think race was a bugaboo in 2008. It think it was an asset. People wanted to be able to vote for black man, (as long as he wasn’t Jesse Jackson), so they could feel good about themselves. Geraldine Ferraro said as much.

Obama doesn’t have the “Let’s elect our first black president.” warm fuzzies going for him this time.

That all said, I think since incumbency is such an advantage and Republican field is very weak, he will be reelected.

Okay…I’ve only read the first part but you completely had me at the Leo Bloom and Edgar Winter lines…

Mike: I agree with your political prognostications–all of them, Still loving your allusions and references.

George, Geraldine Ferraro was an ass. And I don’t mean that in any sexual sense. Mob sense, sure. Her husband’s well connected. And she’s a petty vindictive corpse.

    What — too soon?

George said…”I don’t think race was a bugaboo in 2008. It think it was an asset.”

    For real?

    Huh.

IMO, this is definitely one of those…’It’s a matter of perception’ instances.

  8. Mike Gold
    December 26, 2011 - 6:43 pm

Rick, two-thirds can’t find Iowa on the map. Even a majority of Oh-So-Smart NYC high schoolers can’t tell the “I” states apart. Yeah, Americans will happily let Israel nuke Iran, until gas prices go up. Then they dust off their “We need oil, not Israel” bumper stickers.

  9. Mike Gold
    December 26, 2011 - 6:51 pm

Reg, a whole lotta Americans believe Obama won because a whole lotta OTHER Americans wanted to experience the joys of voting for a black dude. These same folks hope and pray that these joy seekers got it out of their system and 2012 will bring a return to true American values.

I’ll bet most of em are pissed Palin dropped out.

Maybe Trump will make them feel better. If he runs, he’ll certainly make ME feel better.

  10. Doug Abramson
    December 26, 2011 - 8:20 pm

Mike come on, is anything really too stupid for Lieberman?

  11. Mike Gold
    December 26, 2011 - 9:07 pm

Doug… well, probably not but I needed a local reference standard. Artistic license.

Maybe Joe will run on the Trump ticket. He’s already a loser.

  12. R. Maheras
    December 27, 2011 - 10:51 am

If Trump runs as an independent, he’ll split the Republican ticket, and any chance the Republicans had in 2012 will vanish as it did in 1992, when Perot split the Republican ticket and a weak Democratic candidate (Clinton) snuck in and won the presidency with an underwhelming 43 percent of the total vote.

It’s pretty bad when nearly 60 percent of the voters think you suck, but you get elected president anyway. But, like the peasant who got turned into a newt in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” Clinton “got better” in 1996. Much better.

  13. Mike Gold
    December 27, 2011 - 12:09 pm

The electorate seems to think Obama is a smart, nice guy, and Mitt and Newt are dumb assholes (defining “stands for nothing and flip-flops like a crack whore” as a dumb asshole). When nothing else is going on, that’ll bring a few independent points over. Barack’s the guy in the desert with a gallon of water: it ain’t enough, but its the only thing there.

  14. Rick Oliver
    December 27, 2011 - 12:39 pm

I’ve decided to vote for Newt. You can’t help but admire a guy who was dumped by his own campaign manager because of his amoral and unethical behavior.

  15. R. Maheras
    December 27, 2011 - 1:07 pm

Why can’t Obama start leading the executive branch like he actually understands the basic principles of Management 101?

When the pressure is on, why the hell does Romney seem come across like a fast-talking, shifty-eyed, guilty-looking-as-hell used-car salesman?

Why does Newt seem to actually understand so many things about history, politics, foreign policy, governmental operation, etc., yet, when it comes to people skills and empathy, he seems like such an ignorant boob?

Why does Ron Paul often come across as that brilliant but weird relative who sits alone in a corner at family gatherings talking to himself?

Why does it seem as if 2012 may be another presidential election I skip entirely, ala 2000?

  16. Mike Gold
    December 27, 2011 - 4:18 pm

Wow. “Used car salesman.” A classic come back to life! The great Republican vampire!

I think Paul comes off is brilliant and weird because Ron Paul is brilliant and weird. I’m serious about this: he should be a presidential advisor. But, really, in the final analysis, I think he’s too honest to his beliefs to work out in Washington. And if everybody was as totalitarian as he is, we wouldn’t get the roads paved. Not to extend the vampire metaphor, but… that sucks.

I suspect turnout will be lower in 2012, but not as much as one might think. I suspect a lot of people will come out to vote down incumbents, and those with sufficient organization will work hard to get out their supporters. Once they’re in the booth (so to speak; anybody still have a booth?) they’ll vote for president because they’re there anyway.

All together now: “All politics is local.”

MOTU — Oct. 24, 2012 is the 40th anniversary of Robinson’s death, so why don’t you use that as your deadline date? Or give yourself an earlier deadline and use the anniversary as the publication date, which will give your project marketing a built-in newspeg for the media.

  20. MOTU

    R. Maheras,

2012 was the plan all along but I’m loving the anniversary date idea!

    1. GOP maintains control of House. Too many House democrats have declined to run, and some of them have been people who would be in line for plum assignments with a Democratic takeover. They don’t need a weather-vane to know which way the wind blows.

    2. The Senate will be very very close. A charismatic GOP presidential nominee would probably ensure a flip but that’s not in the cards.

    3. The economy will be the big issue because Europe, China or both will go all economic horrorshow on us and we will catch a goodly portion of the shrapnel. This will either help Obama because people will see that he has no control over these events or hurt Obama because people will see that he has no control over these events.

    4. PROMETHEUS will rock my world. On the way out of the theater all my friends will complain about how they hated it. My heart will die a little.

    5. Joe Biden will feel a sudden, overpowering need to spend more time with his family and forgo the stress of a re-election campaign.

(I actually consider #5 low probability but no guts no glory.)

  22. Mike Gold
    December 28, 2011 - 5:01 pm

Bill, I agree with you on your points 2, 4 and 5 — point 4 being more of a prediction of a shared experience.

Point 1, the Republicans holding onto the House, depends entirely on the voter turnout and the dissatisfaction of those who want to hold THEIR Rep responsible for the gridlock. Usually, I’d say this was no biggie but with 8% voter satisfaction I think conventional wisdom might go by the boards and voters will start holding people accountable. But I could be dreaming.

Point 3 is more difficult. Again, I think CW might go by the boards here. The American public couldn’t care less about China and Europe other than as an object of distain (with respect to their involvement in our economy). If they hold Obama culpable for the economy, he’s screwed IF he faces viable competition. If they hold Congress and/or the previous administration culpable, Obama wins. If the independents turn out in typical numbers, which is possible if they want to vote their Rep out, then Obama wins. People who vote to maintain an improving economy, should that still be the case, will vote for Obama.

I’ll make a side prediction: unemployment in November 2012 will be listed as between 8 and 8 1/2 percent.

I certainly agree with your point about Europe, China OR both. I think catastrophe in one will trigger catastrophe in the other. The Republicans will try to hold Obama responsible for that. I don’t think that will work beyond their base. At the end of the day it won’t effect the election either way.

But if we find ourselves in a brand-new war in the Middle East, which is most certainly possible, I think it all goes up for grabs. Unless Obama scores a few more pelts.

    We live in interesting times.

    I’m moving to Neptune.

Really? According to the Tea Party isn’t that where Obama is from?

You know, one of the joys of being a science teacher is knowing that when we get to astronomy all the wags in the class will let loose with the Uranus bon mots they have been saving all semester. “Mr Mulligan, is it accurate to say that Uranus is large and gaseous?” that sort of thing. I wish they would take FUTURAMA’s suggestion and just change the name to Urectum.

  28. Mike Gold
    December 29, 2011 - 8:51 am

Bill, Uranus is a classic. Was it not named after the muse of astronomy? I think it would be impolite for us to turn our backs on Uranus.

Besides, at a certain point — often, about 24 responses — it’s a great way to punctuate a political discussion.

LOVE Futurama, and I’m awaiting the inevitable crossover between Turanga Leela and Gemma Teller Morrow. I have no idea who would win that one.
