A Piece of What You Need, by Martha Thomases – Brilliant Disguise

Another terrorist organization was in the news this week.  According to this article in the New York Times, the African nation of Uganda may be about to pass a law that would make homosexuality a crime, punishable by death.

The extremists who inspired this attempt at mass murder are evangelical Christians: Scott Lively, Caleb Lee Brundidge and Don Schmierer.  Although their theories about homosexuality have been debunked and discredited in the United States, they found a welcoming audience at an event in Africa.

The Times reports, “The theme of the event, according to Stephen Langa, its Ugandan organizer, was ‘the gay agenda — that whole hidden and dark agenda’ — and the threat homosexuals posed to Bible-based values and the traditional African family.”

You can tell from looking at the Ugandan flag to the left that their leaders are insecure about their masculinity.  Why else would they need to put a cock in the center?

I’m not a Christian, but I did attend an Episcopalian girls boarding school for four years, during which time I was required to go to chapel five times a week, as well as take a theology class.  No one ever told us that homosexuals were the prime obstacle to a moral society.  Maybe, since we were a girls school, they were afraid of putting ideas in our heads.

Before that, I attended Sunday school as a Jew, and for that, I read the entire Bible.  I even read the boring parts, about who has to pay when your animal gores another animal, or a slave, or a child.  There were parts about sexual behavior,  but they were vastly outnumbered by the parts about seeking mercy, loving justice, and walking humbly with God.  There’s nothing about homosexuality in any of the Top Ten Commandments.

We’re big fans of the Bible in my house, especially the Song of Solomon (since my belly is, in fact, like a mound of wheat).

One would think the incident in Uganda would embarrass true Christians.  You think they would denounce these fanatics, as they expect moderate Muslims to denounce the Taliban.

You would be wrong.

President Obama recently appointed an openly transgendered woman to his administration.  She’s a remarkable person, literally a rocket scientist, but you wouldn’t know that to hear our American Taliban talk about her.

Here’s a sample:

“Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth, a ‘national organization devoted exclusively to exposing and countering the homosexual activist agenda,’ is wondering if there is some sort of “transgender quota” in the Barack Obama administration. ‘How far does this politics of gay and transgender activism go?’ he said. “Clearly this is an administration that is pandering to the gay lobby.’

“‘This isn’t like appointing an African-American in order to try to provide diversity and right some kind of discriminatory wrong,’ LaBarbera said.”

It’s incredible to me that people who claim to believe in an all-powerful Deity think this same Deity makes mistakes.  Homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people are either created in God’s image, or the Bible is wrong.

But don’t tell that to these fundamentalists.  Just as the Taliban is a group of fundamentalists with a political agenda, these guys are a group of fundamentalists with a political agenda.  Al Qaeda is a terrorist group inspired by the Taliban.  I’ll leave the parallel conclusions to you.

People who flaunt their religion, who feel entitled to tell us what God wants, are the source of many of our problems.  I’d like to propose that, until the poor are fed, the sick visited, and those who mourn are comforted, that they keep their noses out of my business.

Msrtha…as always…another powerful and challenging article. I certainly acknowledge and bear witness to the damage that a warped subset of those Christians that are considered ‘fundamentalists’ have done to the cause of Christ. As there is, of course, only One who Judges rightly and weighs the heart…I nevertheless find myself hard pressed to consider that the likes of the Becks, Malkins, Coulters, etc..(not to mention a shamefully large number of Christian leaders and followers) will be among the number based on the ever increasing amount of poisoned fruit that they evidence.

It is my belief that this subset has co-opted and corrupted the heart of what I’ve come to believe is the Author’s intentions of what a true fundamental adherence to the Manual should reflect. However, it should also be noted that there are other ‘fundamentalists’ who are committed to doing exactly you expressed… (“I’d like to propose that, until the poor are fed, the sick visited, and those who mourn are comforted, that they keep their noses out of my business.”)

A key factor in the dysfunction is what I expressed in a previous thread…that being the fact that a shockingly large number of folks who call themselves Christians are pretty ignorant of the very tenets and instructions that are fundamental to our faith.

That plus the fact that it’s the unchanged nature within humanity that finds it much easier and distracting to cast a stone than it is to love and get one’s hands sacrificially dirty with acts of compassion and grace.

As far as the Ugandan aberrance??…that’s just…what the heck??! Yeah…I suspect that they will be an outcry forthcoming.

Speaking of religion, I’m nominating you for sainthood Martha. You’re writing is miraculous.

Knocking ‘em down, Uganda already had repressive laws against homosexuality. Been in place for centuries. But in a rare display of camaraderie, Muslim and Christian leaders and their followers have united to express their hatred of a common prejudice—homos. A July 2008 poll found that 95% of Ugandans opposed the legalization of homosexuality and a leading Muslim cleric, Sheikh Ramathan Shaban Mubajje, called for the banishment of all homos from Uganda to a desolate island until their death.

The new law, a near sure thing, contains these provisions:
    • Gays and lesbians convicted of having gay sex would be sentenced, at minimum, to life in prison
    • People who test positive for HIV may be executed
    • Homosexuals who have sex with a minor, or engage in homosexual sex more than once, may also receive the death penalty
    • The bill forbids the “promotion of homosexuality,” which in effect bans organizations working in HIV and AIDS prevention
    • Anyone who knows of homosexual activity taking place but does not report it would risk up to three years in prison (http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/12/08/uganda.anti.gay.bill/)

    What year is this?

    What planet is this?

What race is this…oh yeah, that part–human.

And just in case anyone might not be able to suss it out, in Uganda, homosexuality is an umbrella term that is conveniently wrapped around anyone not fitting an expected manner of dress, behavior and expression. History serves me right, didn’t this same approach take place in an aggresive Central European country in the mid-to-late 1930’s?

Who are the brain police, indeed! All in the name of sanctimonious service to nationalistic pride and religion. Brother, Brother and Mercy, Mercy Me. Hell, they’re probably banning Marvin’s songs on account of his last name. If they play it, you will come…

So this about-to-be new law covers those wild and crazy transgendered people like Amanda Simpson. Trans people are more than quite possible the most misunderstood group ever. Hey they’re uh, real different, right? Uh, not so much!

No relation to Homer and friends, as Martha noted, this lady is no tramp but a real rocket scientist with an IQ off the charts. Her sin: apparently it’s her conversion. She simply chose personal integrity and healing over choices others less understanding and more controlling would have made for her. Like convert to our stuff—or die…

Hasn’t “my god is better than your god” stuff killed enough people yet? Apparently not so much…

President Obama appointed the 49-year-old Simpson last November. She began work on Tuesday as senior technical adviser in the Bureau of Industry and Security in the Commerce Department. Her bureau is tasked with protecting national security by managing international trade, enforcing treaties, while promoting economic, cyber, and homeland security. Don’t ask, don’t , ahhh, what?

Ironically, most national media covering this stupefying event missed the boat. On the same November date Simpson was hired, Obama also appointed another transperson, Dylan Orr. Thirty-year-old Orr’s job started on December 7, 2009, He began work as special assistant to Assistant Secretary of Labor Kathleen Martinez.

Is there anyone within shouting distance who would even conceive of the thought that either Bush babies would even consider voluntarily being in the same room as either of these transpeople? The icing on this week’s cake was the announcement that the Federal government has updated its
anti-discrimination policies to outlaw discrimination against transpeople in hiring and promotions.

    Wooo-effin-Hooooooo!

Ever-so-slowly but surely, the times are changing. For every nightmarish Uganda, there’s a bright light. Maine, New York and New Jersey may have temporarily quashed gay marriage but little Kalamazoo Michigan’s citizens voted overwhelmingly to add a trans hate crime law to its books this past November. Did you read right? Kala-ma-effing-zoo! So did the Federal Government. It added homosexuality and gender identity (read: transpeople) to the newly passed federal anti-hate crime statutes.

Hey, I know this is long and most of you have probably nodded off but this week I did get the papal blessing from his masterness, Mr. MOTU, smiling on my rants. I’m rolling with it. And Martha opened the door so I’m strolling in….

Gay and Trans people are NOT going quiet. This girl in particular. In fact, we’re not going at all. Especially to Uganda, particularly if we have vacation plans that don’t involve castration, beheading, rope, massive electrical surges, syringes or, at best, a small room with no view forever. All of you artistic types best stay away from there too. Could have a negative effect on your health.

    Thanks for listening.
    Time has come today.
    Peace.

Uganda has also had a recent increases of human sacrifice, discovered through a poll of its witch doctors.

    I wish I was kidding.

You see, people will hear that story, shake their heads, say something like “See, ‘They’re’ still a bunch of savages.” (The definition of “they” shall remain tactfully unspoken)

And not grasp that the very same opinion of GBLA folks is help by far too many people in this country. So I guess there’s a difference between savage and backward, and REALLY savage and backward.

The more fervent one becomes in their religion, the more potential for interpersonal upset there exists.

If more people treated the religious dictates they treat the pot laws, we’d all probably get along better.

@Reg: Thanks for noticing I wasn’t bitching at all Christians, just the fundies. Jewish fundamentalists are also missing the point. Most of that is within the “family” so you don’t hear about it.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Or their rights. Or their lives.

    The fundamental problem is fundamentalism.

Always true. All too often the case.
    Well done Martha.

Maybe if the law passes we can start telling Mr. LaBarbera to his ilk to move to Uganda, where they’re sure to be happier. And while we’re at it, let’s start an “Adopt a Gay Ugandan” program.

Sadly, “seeking mercy, loving justice, and walking humbly with God” don’t count for shit when you’re thinking about somebody’s hot, hard dick up your ass. And thinking about it. And thinking about it some more. And reaching… down… there…

Yeah, I know. Their bible says homosexuality is an abomination. For a while, I thought that meant gay folk were Gil Kane villains. Pretty cool. Then I read Deuteronomy 5:6–21. “Neither shall you covet your neighbor’s wife. Neither shall you desire your neighbor’s house, or field, or male or female slave, or ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” That sounds sexually ambiguous. You can’t covet your neighbor’s wife or slaves (leaving aside the acceptance of slavery for the nonce). But you can covet your neighbor’s husband; only “wife” is specified. And what about your neighbor’s kids? Homosexuality is akin to a Hulk villain, but pederasty is cool?

Too damn confusing. Fundamentalists, get your story straight before you proselytize.

This is why I could never go into politics. Well, this and the whole background check thing, with as much smack as I’ve written the GOP would have a field day.

However, if we were living in an alternate universe and I was allowed my views ( pro choice, pro Gay, pro civil liberties, pro killing violent criminals during half-time at the Super Bowl, you get the idea) anywho- if I was elected President in this alternate universe I would drop the big one on a few choice countries.

Rachel Maddow has been doing some fine, regular, in depth reporting on this issue on MSNBC, using the title “Uganda Be Kidding Me.” Among other things, she’s connecting the dots between Uganda and Washington’s C Street “Family” (a conservative/hypocritical Religious group). http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/

Thanks for this column, Martha. As you acknowledge, the U.S. is not without its groups who publicly propose execution as the appropriate solution for gayness. Fortunately, they have so far not included a head of state in their number (although Ronald Reagan’s inaction during the first few years of the AIDS epidemic came awfully close to serving the same function).

I’m off today (then again, some might claim I’m off everyday), and catching up. Although it might not matter to some here, as one of the keepers of the flame, I need to clarify a point.

For the record: Publicity arising from Amanda Simpson’s appointment has obscured Dylan Orr’s nomination the same day. What was brought out in the last day or so is that neither one was a first presidential trans appointment. That distinction belongs to Lynn Conway.

On January 31, 1996 (yes, 14 years ago), then-President Bill Clinton named Conway to the Air Force Academy Board of Visitors

Conway was directly named by Clinton and not just an administration appointee. Dylan Orr is the first transman and Simpson has attained the highest post of any American trans person.

Like Simpson, Conway is no slouch. She is a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and recognized as a pioneer in microelectronics. Prof. Conway is a co-author of the classic text on very large scale integrated (VLSI) chip design.

Lynn Conway’s homepage is worth a look—trust me. You’ll be surprised:

    Just sayin’

Is Simpson involved with promoting DRM and an international version of the DMCA at all? If so, there’s a legitimate grounds for complaints about her activities. But going after her for being trans and publicly known as such is NOT on.
